1986 305 TPI, Stock Heads: Thoughts on the Crane 2020 Cam over the STOCK PEANUT?

Hi,

I am continuing to tear down my stock 1986 305 TPI, and getting ready to buy my upgrade parts.

A local parts shop recommended the Crane 2020 Cam as a good replacement for the stock cam, when used with the stock heads. I am looking for a bit of extra performance over stock, particularly on the low-end (stop light to stop light, the on-ramp, etc).

**** I also see this cam advertised on CompCams website: part number 12-388-4, grind number 252AH-12. Anyone have input on this one? Seems close to the above Crane cam.

Any thoughts? THANKS!

Interesting...I spoke to someone at CompCams, and they have also recommended the 12-388-4 cam for me. I have also called my local parts guy, who seems to be quite experienced in this area, and he is looking into it for me.

I will let you guys know what I find out, and what I end up buying. Again, if anyone has thoughts, please do share.

*** FYI, here is the Comp Cam that I am probably going to buy:

Re: 1986 305 TPI, Stock Heads: Thoughts on the Crane 2020 Cam over the STOCK PEANUT?

I am going to purchase the Compcams 252ah-12, I have installed a 406 SBC with 113 heads into my Jeep with a stock 1987 camaro TPI and 24lb Ford SVO injectors. Looks like the best cam for the torque I am looking for and the range I drive in. It has nothing over 4500 though. I ran a simular 252ah-8 in a full size blazer with a HO305 out of an old rusted Trans-am and it pulled like the dickens even though the blazer is about as arrow dinamic as a bread box! Great milage but again not much for anything over 4500...If you are looking for torque and fuel economy in a daily driver I believe you will be very happy with 252...remember the TPI stands for Tuned port so you need run a cam with around 202 dur and 112-116 lsa for the proper tuning to occure or it will fall flat on it's face...my 2 cents...
