1991 Formula L98 Running after 4 years sitting....... a few questions... L-O-N-G....

Well, I finally got this "slumbering bird" running again!!

The car had been sitting for 3-4 years because the previous owner couldn't figure out exactly what was wrong with it. He wound up taking the fuel pump/sending unit out only to find the entire tank was rusted out. He also suspected that the #8 injector was causing problems...

ANYWAY, I finally got to working on it last week and took the old tank out. I then cleared the lines and then installed the new tank/sending unit/pump and fuel filter. I then primed the lines to ensure clean gas was coming to the fuel rail.

After swapping the above parts, the car still wasn't getting fuel - I checked pressure at the rail and had the 43#. I also checked the injectors with a noid light to ensure the ECM was sending the injector pulses. The car would start on starting fluid, but according to the plugs, the injectors weren't firing (yes, checked the fuse as well). The injectors were the stock Multecs. I finally broke down and called SouthBay Fuel Injectors. I spoke with Julie/Julia (sorry, can't remember!) and explained the situation. It definitely seemed wierd that all 8 injectors weren't firing, but I went ahead and ordered a set of their 22# Bosch IIIs. They arrived this morning. I went ahead and installed them this afternoon.

After buttoning everything up, I attempted to start the car - It started the first try! I was surprised that there was no smoke or anything from the exhaust (especially after sitting so long). It sounded healthy.

I turned it off and reconnected everything - hoses, vacuum lines, new belt, alternator, etc... I filled the radiator up and turned the car back on and let it run for 2-3 minutes. With the intake off, I gave it some gas (at the TB, not pedal) - I noticed it pop and a flame shot out of the TB. I turned it off and cleaned up for the evening.

I haven't looked at the timing at all yet (mainly because I don't have a timing light) and haven't checked the cap/rotor... Does the backfire/pop through the intake sound like timing or something else? I did a basic check of the vacuum lines and everything looks to be correct.

IDEAS? I'm thinking I'll change the cap/rotor just for maintenance, but any suggestions/advice would be GREAT!

I'm hopefully gonna have a buddy come by to look at the timing today... We'll see how that goes. I've gotta get a radiator, too - Dang thing sprung a leak.

timing, for sure, but you may also want to check your cam timing if your distributer checks out, sometimes timing belts can stretch and it throws off the ignition timing and you'll notice erratic readings with a timing light

... or you could have heated up a pocket or ether or gas that pooled up in the intake from all the times you sprayed it with starting fluid...

Timing X4. Almost has to be. Flame from the throttle body says you have spark/ignition when your intake valve(s) are still open. I would probably change out that timing chain, just to be on the safe side...
