Fuel pressure issues

So…a month ago, I replaced the fuel injectors with new Delphi injectors. A couple of days afterward, the fuel pump died, and I replaced it with a new Delphi fuel pump—I even replaced the sending unit at the same time.

The car ran spectacularly. Fuel pressure was just a hair under 43 pounds, and it ran like it never had before.

A couple of days ago, it started stumbling…I managed to get it home, and found a new problem.

Fuel pressure is around 30 pounds. One notable change from my earlier checks before doing the work is the fuel pressure immediately drops to zero once the fuel pump shuts off. A month ago, the pressure would hold for a very long time, more than 30 minutes before dropping.

I’m assuming the issue is either the diaphragm for the fuel pressure regulator has died, or the new pump isn’t doing the job….

Suggestions?

Re: Fuel pressure issues

Sounds like a bad fpr to me. I recommend replacing it with the Holley adjustable one.

I was having this issue with fuel pressure dropping to zero immediately after shutdown. I have an Aeromotive AFPR A1000. I removed the top and pulled off the diaphragm. There was a tiny piece of what looked like aluminum shaving that was resting on the seat of the diaphragm which i removed and put it back together. Pressure holds perfectly again. As far as your stumbling situation goes check the fuel filter then the pump. Is your CEL on?

Re: Fuel pressure issues

So..I bought a Holley adjustable fuel pressure regulator…no change. Cranked to the max, I have at best 30 PSI of fuel pressure, and it drops to zero as soon as the pump shuts down.

A real shame…the pump lasted less than a month. I’m assuming the check ball in the pump is sticking open, and not allowing fuel pressure to build to normal levels.

Delphi CFE0110 fuel pump. Looks like I get to replace it again.

Re: Fuel pressure issues

The problem was the pulsator…lasted less than a month before it failed. Eliminated the pulsator, and now pressures are normal again. The only positive I can report is I now have a nice adjustable fuel pressure regulator. I currently have it set to 45 PSI.
