Changed rear gear and went slower???

I changed the rear gear in my 88 SC Camaro Convertible. BONE STOCK 305 TBI. Original gear was 2.73 changed to a 3.42 Posi. Originally i had the problem of wheel spin with the open rear gear. I have 16 x 8 IROC rims with 255 x 55 16 Goodyear Eagle. Now with the 3.42 gears I still have the same problem with wheel spin if launch at anything above idle. ALSO it runs out or RPM and WILL NOT shift into 3rd for what seems forever.

first times 10.09 in 1/8
after gear change 10.84 in 1/8

Any suggestions????

the gears are too steep, all they do is take the engine out of its power band earlier, either movie the power band up or recalibrate your tranny to shift sooner.

not shifting into third is common with 700R4s. I had that problem but I fixed it by installing a T-56. I'm pretty sure a Transgo has a fix for that problem.

Hey burnoutrpm, Let me RESTATE that for you, "STOCK 700R4's suck"

I think Pro-built would take offense to your comment, at the very least. I am sure that your 700R4 junk transmissions weren't from Pro-Built, right? Don't throw out a stupid statement like that without qualifying it with specific experience...Otherwise you sound like the ******* who spouts, "Camaros suck". That kind of intellectual argument is pointless.

As for the gear issues, it is because your powerband in a TBI car is from 1000-4000 rpm...numerically higher gears only work well if your powerband is higher to match. I would suggest upgrading the engine to take advantage of the posi and better gears.

What? Not shifting into 3rd? Never heard of that.

Anyways, what's your 60 ft times comparitive. That will be the biggest indicator, you said you're still spinning but maybe more so now. And not shifting into 3rd isn't helping your times if it shifted into 3rd before. You should have knocked a few 1/10ths off.

Me, I made the mistake like someone earlier said, I went from 2:73s to 3:73s also added a cat-back and knocked off only 1/10th.

I noticed that problem after I went to the track. I did a search on the subject and found a dozen or so posts about it. It's a problem you don't really notice on the street, at least for me, because it's over by aroung 60 mph (if that). Normally you aren't going ***** out til 85 mph.

OK..it DID NOT shift into 3rd BEFORE the gear change but i wasnt out of RPMS either. IF I try and power brake at the line I cant get any rpms up before the tires spin. About 2/3s the track it is maxed and needs 3rd which unfortunatly it doesnt get Looks like the engine is the next step.

yeah if your cars taking forever to shift into 3rd, then its spending alot of time outside its power band. Get it fixed so it shifts at a resonable rpm and you should drop some et

now you have gears its time for valvetrain to match. (or a new engine with correct valvetrain) flow flow flow is the key, cam intake heads. cam intake heads. rinse lather repeat. oh, and get a working tranny first.

"IF I try and power brake at the line I cant get any rpms up before the tires spin" It's going to be much easier to do a burnout with the deeper gears. If you need to launch at a higher rpm, try a higher stall converter. You may need some traction mods to hook-up better. You added traction with posi, and hurt off the line traction with deeper gears. You just gotta learn how to lauch without spin. Getting the tranny fixed will help your times alot.
