700r4 won't get out of 1st, tv cable rattle

Just put a 700r4 into my 91 silverado truck and it won't get out of 1st gear. When warmed up there is a rattle that goes away when I pull on the throttle valve cable. Could this be a sign of a stuck throttle valve? Also I don't have the speed sensor hooked up, cause my original tranny had electronic sensor and this one has a mechanical speed sensor. Does the speed sensor need to be connected in order to upshift? If yes how do I convert a mech. speed sensor to an electric? I REALLY WOULD APPRECIATE SOME HELP. I'M EITHER GOING TO PULL THE REST OF MY HAIR OUT OR THROW IN AN OLD 2 SPEED POWERGLIDE. THK'S

On a '91 you only need the speed sensor for Lock Up operation. The rattle is likely the Pump Slide clacking back and forth. Yes this could be due to a stuck TV Valve.

Thank's for the reply. Gave up on the 700r-4 "it worked before it came to the wrecking yard". yeah right. So i did something even crazier. My truck was stolen a few months ago and when the police recovered it there was a bunch of auto parts in the back including a 4L60-E. I think that's what it is. It has a green hydramatic tag on it with a code no. 5SH D7 and a serial number of 7003 355795. On a whim I thru it in, and it works. The only bummer is I have to manually shift it. No throttle cable and the elec. hookups are differant. "duh" Is there any way to hook it up to electronically shift? If not, will it hurt the tranny not having the electronics hooked up to it? I only need the truck for about a month, then I'll donate it to charity. Waiting on a 7 figure commision check. Time to retire, and pay good people like you to do this kind of work. And not worry about how much it costs. I know those were my favorite kind of clients. Thank's in advance for the reply,

I'm surprised it works (has all the gears). If manually shifting it gets you all the gears?, just take it easy for the month you have it. If it starts to slip during a shift "let off" the throttle immediately to prevent damage. I hope it holds up for you.

Well, I don't seem to have all the gears afterall. Reverse, 2nd and 3rd as far as I can tell. But it's better than 1st gear only. I probably would have to change the computer and the wiring harness to make it work. If there's an easy fix, which I doubt, please let me know.

Thank's Again.

You could install the Trans-Go Performance Shift kit (full manual) and the Trans-Go vacuum modulator setup. This will give you all the gears. You will still need to address the torque converter lockup, ask Trans-Go when you on how to do this, when you install the these parts. Trans-Go's phone # is 626 4437456 8-5 PST.

Because the tranny is left unplugged, it would normally default to third gear, but you can override that by putting it down into 2nd gear, so 2nd and 3rd will be all you get (plus reverse, it doesn't need solenoids). There shouldn't be any slip, because a Pressure Control solenoid that gets no voltage operates at MAX pressure, however 2nd gear starts are not that good for it, but you'll probably be OK if you are yanking it out in a month.

I know this is hokey.

Thank's for the great info. It sounds like thats the way to go. However, In the mean time, Would it be possible to just send say 12 volts down one of the leads of the wiring harness in order to get first gear?? I know it couldn't be that easy, you probably need to send various voltages down more than one lead to get into frist. Butt, If it is, do you know which lead to energize? or where I could get a wiring schematic on the 4L60E??

Thanks again for your reply.
