Why did my trany die
Ok
I was driving my car today and and a mustang wanted to race so I gladdly handed him his *** but in the process of doing that my trany decided it would just give up. I got moving 1-2 was fine then at about 5500 I just let go. It scared the **** out of me to see my motor rev to 6000. I then pulled over to the side of the road and checked the trany fluid. It was brown and stank bad. Now let me also say that this trany was pritty much new. So I hopped in to see what I could do. I started down the road. First gear fine. Second gear was a problem. It would shift into second but as soon as the rpms went past 1500 the trany would slip like nobodys business. So as I gimped home at 20 mph. I decided to call my trany guy who built it and told him what happend and he is going to take a look at it tuesday. Well what happened I dont know much about tranys so I am clueless. Does my motor have to much power for this 700r4? Was it built wrong? All I have is 350hp 400 ftlbs of torque motor in it. Any help would be great.
Also the trany didnt even get that hot. I have a monster cooler and I a temp gauge on it and it was running right where it needed to be.

I went through 8 700r4's before I finally got one built right. And this was when my car was mainly stock. My tranny gut finally had to beef up the clutch pack. In the front clutch pack I think there is like 6 or 7 disc's. By running thinner steel bands we were able to squeeze a couple more clutch dics, to around 9 or so. I diffenitly shifts harder now. But with running thinner bands, you run more heat, and thus friction in you trans. Another problem was constily breaking sprag gears. We went with an after market sprag, and a bunch of "top secert" parts that I dont even know what I paid for. So, to make a long story short, no you car doesnt have too much power, 700r4's are peices of ****. GM was trying to get performence, and fuel economy and it went to hell. My last trans. has held up for about 1.5 yrs. If it goes again, I'll T56 that sucker.

yep I went through so many 700r4s it was just sick! every one says how they are so good. I used a t-5 for years and it just finally broke. I guess it was stronger than everyone says or I just drive it better than most. it sucks trying to find another t-5 but, its cheaper than buying and or rebuilding the 700r4s all the time.

Lately I have come across a few broken aluminum pistons that are easy to overlook, causing pressure leak which will cause frictions in the 3-4 clutch to burn up. The fix is the new steel ones.

Well I brought it back to the guy who built my trany. He took it apart and I guess the third and fourth gear clutch packs had burnt up. He also could not figure out why. He stated that everything looked good and seamed in good working order besides the clutches. I still dont know how they could burn uo so soon.

Well I figured out what happened.
My third gear clutch pack burnt up. Why? Because I had a peice of crap B&M shifter in it. It wasnt lining up right so I think that had something to do with it.
