Well, I too the old governor out, and the gear was toast. We finally got the new governor in, but now we're having trouble getting the cap seated correctly, since access to the top of the cap is pretty much impossible, without removing the tranny. Our next approach will probably be removing the jack that is under the tranny, and sticking it under the oil pan (with a piece of wood), taking out the motor mount bolts, then lowering the motor/trans. Any easier way?
Sounds like a plan, you might also have to remove the tq arm mount at the trans to allow it to drop that extra inch.
Edit: You shouldent need to take out the MM bolts or really use a jack on the engine, just leave the jack on the trans pan remove the tq arm bolts and let it drop. You should have plenty of room then. Just watch out for the dipstick

I've got solid motor mounts, they dont allow for much flex I have a Spohn Torque Arm that mounts to the tranny cross-member, so that is already off. I think the driveshaft is what is not letting the tranny drop, and its being a pain in the arse to remove. My stinkin exhaust is in the way, and I cant get the thing to budge. Oh well.... I'll get that cap on somehow...
Make sure you "do not" push on the middle portion of the cap, as this will (if pushed in far enough) push on the governor itself and tear up the governor gear again. Push on the sides of the cap only.
Pro Built, that was the probelm in the first place. The person who had this transmission before me did just that, hammered right on the middle of the cap... We got the cap on all the way and now it shifts perfectly. The method we used to get the TOP of the cap on was to get a ball joint seperator, and push it up through the shifter linkage hole. I positioned the fork end of the seperator over the lip of the cap, and my dad held it in place while putting pressure on the cap as I tapped the bottom and sides of the cap on. He also had to hit the seperator with a hammerto push the top in just a little more. Definately a pain in the arse, but its all done, and now I can finally drive the car!
