Got Rebuilt 700R4, no shifting......

After my orig tranny fragged, I found what appeared to be a decent looking rebuilt 700R4 in the bone yard for $80. After the install, I have a problem that the trans will not shift and serious vibrations even in (P)ark.

I start out at a slow speed, get up to about 20 MPH and it still will not shift. I can send the engine up to 4500 RPM and it will not shift. After getting up to about 40 MPH the car will float down to about 30 MPH, but I have to kick it back up to 4500 to get the trans to catch.

I tried different positions on the TV cable (long and short) and it didn't make any difference.

I could drop the tranny again and change the tourqe converter, but does anyone think that it would help?

Jim.

How's the valvebody? Maybe it's all gunked up, filter clogged, etc. You never know.....

As far as the vibrations go.....?? Torque converter maybe like you mentioned.... It's installed tight right? Lol.... Didn't by chance f--up your flexplate putting it in?

If the trans only has first and reverse it is possible the governor gear is stripped. The no engine braking in first doesn't sound correct either.

Have you dropped the pan to see how it looks inside?

When I initially got the tranny, I checked the pan and most inner parts that I recognized. The pan seemed to have the "normal" amount of metal particles that I have seen over the years.

I was changing the filter, when I noticed that it had been double-gasketed by the previous owner in the trans body. Simply, he forgot to remove the rubber gasket from the old filter neck in the trans body before he put the new one in. I made sure that the trans body was clear when I put the new filter in and a snug fit with only one gasket around the filter neck.

I had over-drive in my previous tranny and I noticed on the grey valve body (?) that it had a marking of an "O D" on it where the new one did not. Did I pick one that does not have OD on it? I used to have a "junkyard" ID guide, but lost it in a house fire. The 700R4 is very similar to the ......? I have 16 bolt pan square.

I was going to swap the torque conv from the old tranny and see if it makes a difference, but since a lot of metal shavings and bearings where in the previous tranny, would this be a good idea assuming that the TC now contains the same metal fragments?

As you can tell I am new to transmission "break-down" and "repairs" as they have always worked well. Now I am in the situation of having to repair it myself and not a lot of cash to throw at the problem.

Any help will be appreciated.

Jim.
