Grooved Slip Yoke

I'm having a problem with my tranny 200r4 leaking at the tail shaft housing. When the driveshaft was removed the slip yoke was grooved like crazy. My tranny guy checked the seal and bushing and told me that it was still fine and that the problem may be because the motor mounts have collapsed.

I had replaced the slip yoke with another one and it still leaked but not as bad. When I would beat on the car, tranny fluid would spray everywhere underneath. I removed the driveshaft and checked the yoke. It's starting to get grooves like the first one. My tranny guy gave me a new seal and bushing so I can replace it but he says that it may not fix the problem because he feels that the motor mounts are throwing it out of alignment.

Is he right?

I went through something similar with my truck.
I lost the driveshaft at about 5 mph and the thing beat the floor and everything coming out.

I had horrible leaks after hammering the driveshaft back in (it wouldn't slide in) -and I eventually had a new driveshaft made up and had a new seal pressed into the tailhousing assembly.

Mine doesn't leak - but I did still have trouble getting the slipyolk to slide onto the output shaft. I ended up putting the slip yolk through the tailhousing, then over the output shaft, then bolting down the tailhousing assembly.

I don't get any leaks.

I would try replacing the bushing in the tailhousing assembly, if there is one, and having a new seal pressed in and would see what happens.

Do you have any vibrations at any speed?
Maybe your driveshaft is so poorly balanced that the vibes may cause the seal to wear out fast.

Just an uneducated guess..

grooved yoke

Check for a loose or missing engine-to-body ground strap.
There should be at least one from the rear of a head to the body.
Some yokes have a vent hole in the rear which can cause a leak.

Now what would a ground strap have anything to do with the slip yoke? BTW I already know there is a brand new ground strap on it.

I am getting minor vibrations at approx. 40-50 mph goes away then comes back at approx. 70 mph.

I changed the bushing and seal but wasn't able to change the yoke because no one had one in any scrapyards. It still has a very minor leak but I think it will get worse because of the yoke. I would much rather buy a used yoke than put a new one in just in case it gets grooved again.

First off... is your driveshaft balanced?

Second...get underneath the car with a flashlight and look at the splines on the output shaft.

If you can't see them well enough then pull the tailhousing off and look further.

If it looks bent or twisted then you know your problem.

Also does the slip yolk slide on and off easy or do you have to hammer it on?

It's a 200R4 so there is no removable tailshaft housing. The splines look good on the output shaft and the driveshaft itself is balanced. After I changed the bushing I had to hammer on the driveshaft.

I don't think it could be the motor mounts, as the slip yolk should slide in easily reagardless of the position of the motor/trans.

It makes since with the the motor mounts being off causing the whole driveline to be off and then causing vibrations therefor wearing out the seals - but - you should still be able to slide the slip yolk on without hammering.

Take the tail housing off that the seal and bushing are pressed in, and then look at the output shaft with the veichle in gear on jack stands. You will know weather or not its bent.

Also see how well the slip yolk slides on with the housing off of the trans. If it slides on easy I am back to the bent output shaft theory.

You could try and file the burrs off the output shaft, or try and reshape it if it is bent. The goal is to be able to slide the slip yolk on and off easily with the bushing and seal in place. You should not have to hammer it.

The tranny is a one piece casting so I can't remove the tailshaft. When I test fitted the bushing on the yoke it was a little snug. I believe the bushing may have gotten a few raised edges when I was tapping it in. That's why I had to hammer in the driveshaft.

I remember before changing the bushing I was moving the driveshaft up and down and there was a lot of play. After changing the bushing there was hardly any play in the yoke.
