if i wanna upgrade my rearend...newbie Qs

sorry but i could really find what i was searching for...
im hoping to upgrade to 3.73 posi rear end...
as of right now i believe i have a 3.23, non-posi.

question is can i turn my current rearend into a posi and buy the gears and have them installed?

or do i have to buy a new rearend that has a posi., then the gears.

i dont know how it all flows together so anyhelp is appreciated. thanks!

Axle/Gears: 3.27
The "posi" part of the rear end is the differential. You will need to find a "3 series" differential for the 3.73 gears. you can buy both of these from Summit Racing, Jegs, or Thunder Racing. I personally wouldnt spend big money on an aftermarket differential ($300+ dollars), Id look on the board for people selling good factory posi differentials and buy one of them. Id buy the gears new though. Its farely simple. Also your rear end is probibly a 7.5 10 bolt so you will know what to buy parts for. I hope this helps.

Yup, thats exactly what you need man. Those are good differentials and thats a pretty good price for it. Hopefully someone off here doesnt see that and go snag it out from under you. Id pull down the link just be be safe. Good luck with the gear/diff swap.

well i talked to a guy about installing it and he said if the gears arent gm then ill probably get some gear noise? what exactly is that... bad??

why woulnt you buy used gears?

Some gear noise is somewhat normal when installing aftermarket gears because most of them are heat treated differently then the GM gears and are alittle bit harder, BUT someone with years of experiance seting up rearends should be able to set them up where the gear noise isnt at an annoying level. Also, you shouldnt buy used gears because over time the gears will "break in" and develope a contact patch between the teeth of the ring and pinion gears. When you setup used gears its almost impossible to get the gears setup in the exact contact patch that was made when the gears were in the other rear end causeing more noise then the new gears and in some cases damaged gears. Your best bet is to get a new set of gears and ask around your area about who is the best at setting up rear ends. If the person is good you will hear there name over and over. I hope this helps.
