Converter replacement & tranny labor costs

I drive a '92 Camaro with an LO3 and a 700R4. The torque converter has been bad for about a year now, but was never much of a problem. In gear, the converter would make an annoying hissing sound, but only at idle. It didn't seem to affect performance at all.

I think it's finally time to replace the converter, as it has become much more noisy. I have another converter that can be put in. Seeing as how the tranny has to come out anyway, I would like to have it taken apart and looked at by a professional to ensure that it is still in top condition. How much should I expect to pay for labor costs? I've heard that a couple local shops will charge as much as $450-$500 for labor costs alone, does this price seem reasonable? Any info, opinions, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

depends on if they go by book labor rates or how long it actually takes. Just to swap a trans out takes me about an hour. Add to that time to flush the cooler, and do the actual work TO the trans itself. Expect to pay 3-500 for the labor on the trans to rebuild it if there's problems. Under 200 for R&R.

Honestly I think the transmission is fine, but I'd still like to have it looked at while it's out of the car. I've been told that even if the transmission has no issues, I can still expect to pay at least $400 just for the labor of them taking it out and taking it apart, checking everything, replacing the converter, and putting it all back together and back in the car. Although it's a lot of work, the cost seems a bit steep to me. But playing it safe and spending the money to ensure everything is mechanically sound seems like a good idea.
