700r4 on a carbed engine, need experts, HELP
Heres a breif history went from a 305 TBI to a 350 Carbed, no ECM. Now im having a problem shifting. Before you jump to any conclusions i just put ina new TC and Flexplate. Ive had my car this way sence Feb. and it shiftted fine. Now when i pull out on the TV or Detent cable the farther i pull it out the TC starts whinning and it still does not shift.
Is my TC already locked up cause it finally shifts when im doing about 30MPH and about 4K use to have perfect shifting points then all of a sudden it was red lining bewteen shifts thats why i replaced the TC.
I need help i need this car by friday, anyone at all.

NO but thats the funny thing is it ran fine untill i f'd the TC the first time. Now it wont shift at all i mean can the TC lock on its own.
I guess what i need to know is what does the Tranny do if the TC is locked and you are in Stop and Go traffic.

The TCC being locked will kill the motor when you stop in gear. Just like you would if you stopped with a manual with it still in gear and not pressing the clutch.
As for the TV cable (not a detent!) It has one and only one proper setting! Do a search you will find the process.
The TV cable controls the trannys shift points and line pressures, misadjusted it will cause goofy shifting and burn up a tranny in a real hurry. By pulling the cable like you did it makes the tranny think your going WOT all the time, thus the high shift points.

What do you mean a properly working 700r4. I preety much in the same boat as kjvail1204 vbmenu_register("postmenu_3067570", true); . I just put in a 355ci and a new 700r4 with 3000stall.And i have been told I will fry the tranny without a tc lockup switch.

Unless there's a hydraulic problem with the transmission or it's been modified for a manual valvebody, the torque converter will not lock when the car is still.
The torque converter hydraulic circuit takes its pressure form the 2nd gear circuit, so it can only lock in 2nd gear or higher. When the car is stopped, the transmission is in 1st.

TCC has nothing to do with your shifting, auto trans. shifting are controlled by the gov., valve body, throttle pressure, or the ECM/PCM whatever you wanna call it.FYI

Sounds like either the TV cable is on set right or you did not install the torque converter right. When you put the converter in you should always check to make sure that you can spin the converter freely before you bolt it down, if not somthing is wrong!

So you guys are saying that there is no need for a tc lockup switch and nothing will happen to the converter or the tranny at all. And if thats the case why would anyone need a tc lockup switch?

Ok the TC did turn freely, but now it takes it to really high RPM to shift. If i pull the TV cable out any the TC makes a whinning noise. I pretty much have to let off the Throttle in order for it to shift. Could there be something inside that is causing it to act this way.
Does anyone know how to wire the TC switch in. Not the kit you can order just to put a switch on plug that goes into the tranny.
Do i need to drop my pan and look for something inside.

when you put in your TC it should have clicked three times 1st time Input shaft,2nd time oil pump, 3rd stator. Yes theres a possibility you might have to rebuild, also check your fluid color and smell.

pull the governor out with a twisting motion, it will come out with the tranny still in the car. move the flaps on the outside up and down and see it you can see the valve inside moving up and down

no, when you pull your tranny dipstick to check the level, check the color there. I haven't gotten that far in class as far as goverenors go. But trust me from experiece on teh TC and teh fluid color.

tanny fluid is still red, I pulled the Gov. and i saw the two little seal thingies move top and bottom. the gear didnt turn but i figured it didnt have to.
I cleaned the Gov and pushed the TV cable all the way out and all the way back and still no change in the shifting, i took the plug off the side (three wire) do i have to do something to that, i cant remember if all the wires were cut when i started.
ALl i know is ive been driving it sence Feb without a ECU and then all of a sudden it would shift only at red line, I would left off the gas to get it to shift. I pulled the TC and there was metal in it so i got a new one, also got a new flex plate. The shifting problem is still the same. The tranny fluid was a darker color but it did not smell burnt. There was no large metal in the pan, just the little grey stuff. I dont think the tanny fluid had ever been changed.
When i had the shifting problem, there was tranny fluid coming all down the TC and off the front of the trany, i checked the front seal and its good.
Guys i dont wanna blow the tranny if thats not the issue. Ive only taken it a few blocka dn havent gone maybe over 20 for more than a 20 feet, it still wont shift.
anyone anyone at all

as long as you have a clean area, a repair manual, and a bunch of patience, go for it, having the tools to do it is a big plus too.

heres a quick question do you have a daily driver? other then your F-body, if so then go for it but get some practice in first on other trannys, so you'll have the experience on rebuilding a tranny, then rebuild yours. Otherwise take it to a shop and have it done if you have the money. me i'm going to school for autotransmissions and transaxles, and the stuff i'm learning is really helping me out understand how the transmission works, and what will cause it not to work. So i'd highly recomend if you can afford it go to school and learn about this stuff cause it can really help out in the future.
