Abbott Cable X Box questions/opinions
I’m going to be putting in a T56 and was looking at buying the Abbott Cable X box to get my mechanical speedometer working. First of all, what kind of connector do I need to order it with? I figured you just bought it but apparently you can order it for different types of speedometer connections. Does the 87 Camaro use the screw-on or snap-on style cable to connect into the speedometer? What size is the connector? I would check but my car is in storage for the winter.
For those of you that have used this device, what were your thoughts? Can this box spin the cable fast enough to get the speedo all the way up to 145mph? The people at Abbott weren’t sure. How bad is the speedometer lag when you punch it? Would the lag effect the computer? Does the vehicle speed affect the air/fuel ratio or spark advance/retard or anything weird like that?

You will need the snap on style speedo cable. As far as the thing working good, I don't know yet. Because I hav'nt got a straight answer on how to wire it yet into the car.

The wiring is real simple, isn't it just 3 wires. Ground, switched 12v source, & speed sensor on tranny? Where are you running into problems?

I guess I am over analyzing the wiring. I will wire it the way I think it should go and see what happens.

There are two wires coming from the sensor on the trans. I believe that you hook the box up to only one. There is a way to test to see which is the correct one. Call Abbott & ask them. They seemed to know what they were talking about.

Well I hooked the yellow wire from the speed sensor which I beleive is the signal wire= to the white wire on the Abbott box. The purple wire from the speed sensor= ground I hooked to the black wire on the box. Hav'nt driven the car yet but if it does'nt work I will be going to a chassis ground. Thank you for your help gentlemen.

I'm thinking that the box should go to ground and not the speed sensor but I don't know for sure. Let me know what you think when you get it working.

Hey there. I tried to get the box working tonight. I went through with the dip switch test and the part where the motor is supposed to spin the speedo cable did not work. So Abbott enterprises is sending me a new box, However I think it is wired properly. I took the car out tonight for it's first voyage with the T56 it was a lot of fun, I sure don't miss that POS 700R4. Thanks for all the feedback. To change the subject how does the BandM ripper shifter compare to the pro 5.0. I want to get a real quick shift, it does'nt feel like I'm getting it with the BM ripper.

I haven't tried one but I hear that the Pro 5.0 has the shortest/closest shifts of the bunch.

So how does this box hook up the the speedometer cable? Do you plug it into the cable underneath the car where it used to hook up to the transmission? If so, this is a screw on connector not a snap on right? Or do you disconnect the cable and hook it directly to the back of the speedometer? If it hooks into the speedometer do you have to pull the speedo out to disconnect the cable? I looked up under the dash and don't see how I would get my hand up there to disconnect the cable. Any tips? I've got my new tranny in and I want to get this box ordered so I can get the speedo hooked up.

Mike you have to hook the cable from the Abbott box into the back of your speedo head. It is easiest if you drop the steering column down (2 13mm nuts). remove the instrument cluster trim I think there torx#10 screws. Then remove the instrument cluster which I beleive are 2 10mm nuts. You will then be able to access and remove the original speedo cable from the back of the cluster, mine was the snap on style. I had my cable custom made from Abbott to the length of 10.5" so I could mount my Abbott box in a nice spot mounted near the firewall. The setup is now working very well once I set the dip switches correctly. Hope this helps. Later...

Yea that helps a lot! Thanks.
How fast have you had you're car going with this box hooked up? My speedometer goes to 145, do you think the box could spin the cable fast enough to peg out the speedometer?
