OKAY! im confused(but that aint hard)

im building a 355 for my 86 right now. the engine came from a mid to late 90's truck(vortec block) and is the same block used for the ZZ4's(according to mortec by the casting #) its a 1pc RMS, i have a starter that seems to be a small body starter with a stagered bolt pattern with a champion PN of 9990S(cross referenced to a late ninties half ton with a V8 w/ external thru bolts) now what im wondering is this for a 153 or 168T flywheel, if its for a 168 t will it work with a 86' 700R4 that came behind a LG4 i know i need a internally balanced flywheel, with the batwings but im confused on what this starter is for and if it will work for my application. ive bolted it onto the block and from the center of the crank to the starter gear there is about 7" so what i can tell this is for a 168T but i havnt really gotten a definative answer on whether or not i can use a 168 tootk fly wheel for my application, BTW ive searched and come up with very little, so any input would be helpful! thanks

If it's staggered pattern, it's for 14" / 168-tooth flex plate.

Don't confuse the batwing weight with internal/external balance. The motor is internally balanced.

Yes the flex plate and starter will work, as far as the motor and trans are concerned. Hard to say whether it will fit with the exhaust or not. That part of the car is turned away from your monitor right now so I can't see it well.

my machine shop said since my engine is internally balanced, i need an internally balanced flywheel, but it will still have the weights(he callled them batwings), will the 14" 16T flywheel fit inside the 700r4 bellhounsing, what do you mean by the exhaust?

Yes your engine is internally balanced.

Yes you need the batwing. Even though it looks to your eye as though it's "external" to the motor, the motor is internally balanced, but requires that weight. "Internal" vs "external" balance is not determined by which side of the oil seals, or even which side of the crank/flywheel junction, the balance weight is mounted on.

Best to just forget those words, leave them out of your vocabulary altogether, and move on. You need a stock 305/350 flex plate, like the one you've got.

I mean about the exhaust, that not all exhaust systems will clear all starters; and that the starter for the smaller flywheel, being 5/8" closer to the crank centerline, has about 5/8" better odds of fitting to your exhaust.

Yes the 14" flex plate (it's not a flywheel) will fit inside a 700 BH; just like it does in trucks.
