9-bolt inter-changeability?
Between a 87 and a 89...
I know the calipers & rotors are different, an I think the backing plates flanges are different, but what about...
axles?
ring gear?
pinion gear?
housing? (is are the backing plates & flanges different?)
Basically...Is there anything from the 87 9-bolt rear, I can salvage, for a 89 rear?

I have a 90 and it's got the 4-bolt backing plate. I would suspect that all of those parts are interchangeable. I would salvage the whole kit & kaboodle if I had the opportunity. sort it out later. opportunity only knocks once.

Everything is interchangeable, there were no changes in the 9 bolt throughought the production run.

Re: 9-bolt inter-changeability?
Cool. I guess I'll just ditch the calipers & rotors, and keep everything else, for any future needs.

Re: 9-bolt inter-changeability?
what about inter changeability between the 9 bolt and 10 bolt. i heard that parts are hard to find for the 9bolts and was wondering what exactly can break that isn't interchangeable.

Nothing is interchangeable between the 9 bolt and 10 bolt.

Re: 9-bolt inter-changeability?
is it just the guts of the rear end that isn't interchangeable or is it stuff like wheel bearings and brakes too?

Rotors and calipers are the same, but they're not really part of the rear end.

Re: 9-bolt inter-changeability?
Yes, all 10 bolts with disc brakes got PBR calipers starting in 1989. There are no differences in the brakes between 9 bolts and 10 bolts of the same year (except for the backing plates).

Re: 9-bolt inter-changeability?
That's new to me
Here's one right here.
The pic sucks, and doesn't show the cover; but you have my word of honor, it's a 10-bolt. Came from about a 91 or 92 GTA. Yes I'm quite sure it's a 10-bolt: 10-bolt gears (just the stock ones for the car, 3.73) fit it, a 10-bolt Eaton posi fits it, and a 10-bolt T/A cover is on it. Not only that, it has 10 bolts.

Re: 9-bolt inter-changeability?
Right; a VERY VERY few 90s, mostly at the VERY beginning of the 1990 production run in 1989, got leftover 9-bolts from 1989. Yours must be one of those few.
Not sure what Stephen is all about, there? All I'm doing is showing pictures of things that EXIST and quoting well- and widely-known production facts; is there a problem with that? Sorry if facts hurt.
