10 Bolt drum to 10 Bolt disc,, questions
Here's what i would like to do, and please give me your opinion on what i should do.
My 92 Camaro has rear drums, a T5, and originally had the 305 TBI.
What ratio do i have? (i'm thinking 3.08)
What size ring gear? 7.5", 8.5"....?
Axle splines?
Posi?? (if it is, it sure don't act like it)
Ok, should i rebuild it with like a Auburn limited slip diff or a powertrax performace locker?
I want 3.73 gears, posi and disc brakes. I will probally get Baer brakes in the future. I'm NOT building this car for the strip but for the street and maybe some autocross.
Should i get different spline axles?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated,
Dave

Your 92 305 TBI stick car came with a 3.08 open 7.625" 10-bolt rear end, with 28 spline axles. If you want to keep it, you can get an SLP take-off torsen posi for $100, plus a set of 3.42 gears from a 4th genner who upgraded, along with the correct speedo gears (purple 7 tooth, white 19 tooth) and be in business. If you want disc brakes, you'll have to swap in a new rear end, preferably one from a 90-92 car. They'll be either 3.23 ratio from an automatic, or 3.42 ratio from a stick. The 3.42 ratio is preferred, as GM doesnt make speedo gears for a 3.23 5-speed car for 90-92. You'll need another solution, like a cyberdyne box, for that.

Ummmm, correct me if I'm wrong but a 4th genner's gears won't fit his rear b/c it's a 2 series carrier and the gears only fit 3 series carriers. But the takeoff posi is good to go

You should have a 7.5" and 28 spline axles. The 28 spines are the best factory ones available. For the gear ratio you your best and eaisiest bet is to look at your RPO codes in you glove box and use the decoder on this web site to find out. It will be a code like GU and then a number

And the later 10 bolts are 7.625" in diamter for the ring gear. The earlier ones are 7.5". I think the switch was made in 85, but I am not sure on that.
