I have an oppurtunity to buy a stock 10 bolt housing, with a mini spool 3.42 gears, and im not sure about the axles if they are stock or not. It is a drum brake rear end, and my car is disc.

i was thinking of picking this rear up cheap he told me itd be under 100bucks, and putting the mini spool in my rear end, and putting the 3.73s on it. Switch over the axels if they are better than stock.

My concern is that i know the car would be full time posi. I know that would be great for the track, as my car sees the street alot, but i dont think it would be very good street maners in the corners, since the out side wheel is trying to turn faster than the inside since its traveling farther so would the car sort of hop in corners?

just looking for some input on what you guys think?

My opinion has always been that a spool of any kind is dangerous on the street. I have seen too many parts break because of a spool that was run on the street. I have seen broken axles, broken studs and other problems. Then there are the handling issues. It just isn't worth it to me. I know that many people are going to say that they have run spools on the street for years with no problems, but that doesn't mean that they won't break an axle, loose controll of the car and kill someone tomorrow.

If you are looking for something that is easy to install then check out the Lock Right. If you are changing gears anyway then look at the Eaton Posi or Truetrac.

yea, see i already have the 3.73s in my car now, and i have a bad posi unit in my car that has stopped being posi, so this was a inexpensive solution to my problem, and knew itd be good for the track but knew at the same time it wasnt going to be very street friendly, how much will one of those other posi untis cost?

The Eaton can be had for $427 plus shipping. The Truetrac seems to be a little cheaper. I prefer the Eaton for street/strip use. The Lock Right goes in a standard differential case, so you would need to find one of them first. You will probably be better off with one of the others. Don't get an Auburn.

No, it would be full time locked axles. There's no posi and no differential action when the axles are locked. Both axles will turn at the same speed all the time.

An open or posi differential allows the outside tire to turn faster than the inside when turning corners. Even a gradual bend in the road has a different turning radius from the inside to the outside tire.

Running with locked axles on the streets is dangerous. Mini spools are designed for dirt track racing or offroad driving where tire slip is normal.

Spend the extra money if the car is driven on the street and buy a good posi.

thanks for the reply, i assumed that people were going to go against it, and i was just interested and courious because it was pretty much going to be given to me. but thanks for the quick replys

yeah i full posi on the street is not the way to go
it may handle alright on a dry road but on wet road it will be near imposible to keep from losing it
also it chews your rear tires up bad cuz there always fighting eachother around turns

I went the mini spool route. Worst decision I ever made on my car.

I have a mini spool in mine. This is exactly what you can expect from it. Pulling in and out of parking spots will be a serious pain. Mine chirps and pops when ever I do it and the car wants to naturally go straight when pulling in or out so its a major pain to park. It does hook perfectly in a race. I've got over 400HP going to the ground and on a track it just squeels and goes, less than two foot of wheel spin with drag radials.

The worse problem is safety! At speeds over 40mph, even in a straight line, the car will try to spin out. Twice the car has wound up down an embankment and I swear I have new gray hairs because of it. I did it with the drag radials and street tires! I will NOT drive it again in the rain untill that rear is GONE!

If your car is gonna see street time then DO NOT PUT A SPOOL IN IT! Its the worst mistake I ever made concerning a car.
