TV cable pulled out too far?
I am in the process of installing a 52mm throttle body on my 89 GTA. A friend bought it for me and got me an LT1 style instead of TPI. So far all I have had to do is buy a different TPS sensor, the stock TPI IAC bolted right up.
Now I am trying to hook up the throttle, TV and cruise cables. The problem is the TV and cruise cable attachment points are about 1" further away from the cable bracket that's bolted on the side of the plenum. The cruise control cable was adjustable at the other end that attaches to the cruise control diaphragm, so that fits now no problem. The TV cable on the other hand was quite a tight fit, but I got it on the bracket. I got in the car to test the gas pedal and it seems pretty tight. As I pressed the pedal it made the ratcheting sound on the TV cable, but then stopped about halfway. I am able to keep pressing and get the throttle open 100% but I am almost afraid I'm going to break the TV cable. How can I tell if the TV cable has run out of slack? I don't want to leave it like this and end up breaking something inside the transmission or breaking the cable.

you just need to set the tv cable so that it is pulled out all the way at WOT. you may need to modify to bracket since you made those changes to the intake. get the bracket roughly where it needs to be, then reset the adjuster on the tv cable. then get in your car and press the pedal right to the floor. that will properly adjust the tv cable.

the cable should feel like it's about to snap at wide open throttle. It is supposed to feel like that. It shouldn't be so tight as to affect your throttle though. tight is good, but my old boss used to tell me "there are only good old big ones and big old good ones.", whatever that meant. lol

Re: TV cable pulled out too far?
Thanks, I have been messing with the bracket assembly and I think I will just have to "engineer" something to move it forward about 1". The problem I'm having is I run out of adjustment when I go to WOT, and I'm pretty sure you're supposed to have some "ratchet" left in the cable when you're at WOT. I may just move the bracket forward and use only one or two bolts to hold it in instead of the 3 it used originally.

Re: TV cable pulled out too far?
Ok, I made a little bracket that mounts to the side of the plenum and moves the factory bracket forward about 1". Now everything fits just fine. I got one or two clicks out of the shifter cable when I finished adjusting everything, seemed just fine. Problem is, it doesn't shift correctly. It will shift from 1-2 and 2-3 at around 3k rpm, which is higher than normal, and the shifts are harder than normal, too. It also will not downshift hardly at all, I mashed it coasting at 25-30, no downshift. It shifts at about 3700 under WOT.
Could I have bent the lever or something inside the transmission? I tried it with the trans in neutral and pulled the cable in and out, it seemed to have a decently smooth motion and wasn't stuck on anything.

Re: TV cable pulled out too far?
This time I reset the TV cable, pushed it all the way into the housing and then opened the throttle all the way, it clicked 3-4 times. On the test drive it wouldn't shift 1-2 or 2-3 until 3500 or so, but it shifted at 5000 RPM at WOT, which is correct. So I feel like I've made progress but don't know where to go from here. If it's shifting correctly at WOT, how do I adjust part throttle shifts?

Re: TV cable pulled out too far?
Alright, I finally got it fixed. It was all in the adjustment of the TV cable and how the arm on the throttle body was pulling on that cable. I had the arm straight up and down directly in line with the throttle blades pulling the TV cable 90* forward and down, and it needs to start more like 25* behind the blades so it pulls the cable more forward and less downward.
I got it all back together and adjusted the cable in, then opened the throttle all the way and it clicked 2-3 times. On the test drive shifts were at about 1800-1900 RPM with light throttle and 4800-4900 at WOT. Good enough for now, I'm going to order the sonnax spring to increase the light throttle shift points a little bit.

Re: TV cable pulled out too far?
B&M sells a governor kit to adjust shift points approx $35 and comes with springs and weights. Instructions in the kit are good also. That and the t.v. work together to determine shift points. just thought i'd throw that in there.
