wierd vibration from rear end

well, i get a wierd vibration at certain rpms.. i know this can come from anything, so i started looking around teh car. i took the rear wheels off, rotated the drums and on the rear right, there is a low.. hmm, how to describe, clicking? that im sure is the vibration at higher speeds. what is this? its not a posi rear either. i think it has gotten slightly worse over time, but maby its my mind seeming that way. oh yea.. hehe, on the way back to my school today, i saw a dog relieving himself on a mustang in a used car lot, quite funny

Sounds like an axle bearing.

I agree, gotta be the axle bearing. Or maybe a brake part running around in a drum.

It's not quite the same as a trailer bearing. That's just a hub. What rear do you have?

You probably have a 10 bolt rear. If so it's totally different than a trailer(so is the 9 bolt). The axle slips through the bearing and spins within it. To replace you have to pull the diff cover, pull the c-clip, pull the axle out. A slide hammer type puller works slick to remove the bearing and seal. Tap the new bearing and seal in, install the axle, install the c-clip, install the cover, ADD DIFF FLUID. Since it's been making noise for a while, the axle is probably screwed up where the bearing rides. You then have to replace the axle or get a 'repair bearing'. The repair bearing simply changes the place axle rides on the bearing to a not screwed up place. It also has a built-in seal. I've installed many-a-repair-bearing without ever having a problem. Including my 82 camaro.

i have a 10bolt, sorry for not telling before. its out of a 70s or 80s(the guy before me put it in) van, those really long ones. anyways, it doesnt sound too complicated.. i plan on selling the car in about a month if all goes as planned. should i take the time to fix, or will it get worse? it is noticable btw 40 and 50mph, but it really isnt that bad. considering its a '74 model, i think most people would just pass it off as something expected of a car being that old, and nothing wrong. opinions?

Ever been driving down the road and have a wheel come off? That's what can happen with that problem. Obviously it's a bit difficult to control a car with only 3 wheels.

Ever bought a car from somebody that did something like that to you? Makes you really want to put a .30 hole right betwen their eyes, doesn't it?

It's not very hard or expensive to fix. Take care of it, rather than leave an unguided deadly missile on the road looking for an opportunity to kill somebody.

cant say i've had a wheel come off, but my brother-in-law has. you've got a good point, i'll be glad to fix it and get some experience in the mean time. Question is, what parts do i need specifically, and where to get them? Thanks for the help

edit, plus i hate the idea of my nice car hitting a pole/tree/fence, the like

If it's a 10-bolt, you'll need an axle and a new bearing; or if you're lucky (you probably are) you can use one of the "repair" bearings they make now. You have to take the axles out, knock the old bearing out, replace the bearing, and put the axles back in. To get the axles out, take off the cover, remove the little screw that holds the pin in, slide the pin out, then one at a time push the axles into the rear end while your hand is up in there to catch the C-clip, then once those are out slide the axles out. Knock the bearing out with a 6' long piece of about 3/4" water pipe. Do both of them while you're there, a regular bearing and seal are like $12 total. You can get bearings and stuff at any parts store, an axle from the boneyard if you go that route.

Yea, it's a 10bolt. When i go to the yard to get an axle, how much should i say its worth to me? or how much is too much, bc i think the guy that owns the one and only yard around here may want to see how much he can get out of me, and say he wants more than its really worth. Should i get two while im at it?(axles) or does it not matter at all if i replace the other one? thanks for the help. this clip you talk about, it is in the diff.? i think i understand the process, just dont wanna get half way through it and get stuck.. hehe, that would suck

What I would do, is take the rear end apart, and look at the axles. You might need both, or just one, who knows. If you need both it will probably be cheaper to just buy a whole rear. If I was to guess, I'd say $75 for an axle and $125 for the whole rear.

Make sure the ones you get have the same spline count (26 or 28) as the ones you take out.
