Gearing for street performance - how much is too much? Opinions needed.
Last week I posted a question about running 4.10 gears with a T56. I should have been more specific when providing information. First of all, I'm planning on going with the aftermarket T56, which has steeper ratios:
2.97, 1.94, 1.35, 1.00, 0.84, 0.62
I did some math to figure out what my overall ratios would be with this trans and 4.10 gears. I'm listing the first 3 gears. 4th is obvious.
w/ 4.10's
1st - 12.177
2nd - 7.954
3rd - 5.35
or, if I went with 3.73's
1st - 11.078
2nd - 7.236
3rd - 5.035
Engine is a 360 w/ Edelbrock heads & tpi base, crane cam 216/228 .484/.512 112 ls.
AS&M semi-siamesed runners, 52mm tb, Edelbrock headers, 3" Hooker catback, etc. There's more but those are the basics. Makes power to 6000 rpm, and my goal here is fun street car, it doesn't see much track use.
So, are the 4.10 overall ratios, especially a 12.177 first gear, too much for street use? Would I be better off with 3.73's?
I know some people have run 4.10's with a 700R4, and that trans has a 3.06 1st gear, so overall first gear with that combo would be...about 12.5 - that's steep.
So please tell me what you think, especially if you have run similar gearing. Thanks guys.

I think that 12.25 is the optimum ratio to shoot for. May be wrong. Of course this number is for track performance.
