adjusting shift point on a 305tpi?

I've been messing around with the cable on the throttle trying to fix the shift point because the car wants to shift at 6,000rpm from 1st to second and 6,500rpm from 2nd to third. This is to high for a 305 tpi. Tranny was rebuilt and only has 10,000 miles on it. It's been shifting like this since I had the tranny rebuilt. Can I hurt anything by moving the cable forward? Any advice?

I assume you mean at WOT, right? You will have to make changes at the governor, going to a little bit heavier weights on the secondary side (inner).

Yes, I've just been messing with it at wot. TPIS insider book tells how to adjust the cable but it doesn't go into detail. All it says is to adjust the cable by moving it forward or backwards. I think I'll just take it to the transmission shop and ask them.

You just did ask a transmission shop. Here is the correct way to set TV but remember, once it is set, that is it. Anything else is calibration and as I said, you need to make changes at the governor. There are kits available for doing this easily.

To adjust the TV Cable skip the book method and do this: Press the D button on the adjuster and loosen the cable setting. Now, have someone floor the gas pedal while you check to see if the throttle plate is open all the way. Usually they are off a little and will wiggle. Do whatever you have to do to get it open solid. Now, with the pedal still floored, press the D button and pull the cable casing (the black tube) back as hard as you can and release the button. You now have the engine, tranny and gas pedal all in sync at WOT. Mark the cable so if for some reason it gets moved you can know where to put it again. The problem with the 'self adjust method' is that it bends things and puts them permanently out of whack. It is also the full TV setting, which is theoretically what the GM method does.
