1985 Borg Warner T5 From 2.8L Camaro

Hey everyone, I havent posted in a while But I have something Im not Sure about and Im looking for Some information if anyone can help..

I just bought a used transmission from someone who posted an ad on Craigslist selling two t-5's one from a 1989 Camaro and one from a 1984 camaro.. I payed $150.00 for it and my friend and I Checked it out and the shifting semed fine and it didnt look like it was leaking.. I dont think it could of been beaten too much because it was in a 2.8 camaro. My questions are this..

The guy said it would fit in my 5.0L GTA but I would have to get a diffeent clutch because of the splines.. is this true? and I ran the ID tag on the transmission and it gave me the gear ratios and I have a comparison between a 2.8L and a 5.0L t-5.. will i see more torque? or is it unsafe to use this because it will blow up??

It's a NWC, so it's only officially rated to 250 lbs/ft. Will it break? Depends on how you drive it. If you take it easy on the trans (no powershifting, and no action on sticky tires) it will probably be fine. You will need a hybrid clutch with a V6 splined disc and a V8 pressure plate, but they are not hard to put together. Just tell the company you buy the clutch from what you're doing and they should get you the right parts.

Hey thanks for the info, I was hoping someone would answer soon.. I have something more at my fingertips now, I went to my friends house last night and i got what was left of his T5 from his 1992 formula. i ran the number on the t5 and its still non world class but its for 1986 GMC F car... I dont think I can use this transmission. the gear tree itself is ok but there is a bottom gear that is on a shaft that slides side to side, thats missing teeth i am assuming thats reverse or something I know NOTHING about the gears. but before we replaced it on his car reverse would crush and clank when in gear so.. all the gears on that main shaft are visibly ok and they are for the 5.0L v8.. can i make a Nice transmission with these two units if I buy a rebuild kit and a book on t5 rebuilds?.. or can I take the input shaft that matches the splines on my clutch and just switch them out?? ill get some pics up on the transmission with the crushed gear

Re: 1985 Borg Warner T5 From 2.8L Camaro

The T5 from a '92 Formula was a NWC? That's strange, unless it was replaced at some point. If you have two NWC with the same gear ratios then you can swap parts, and the same holds true for WC. If one is a WC and the other is a NWC none of the parts interchange. If the gear ratios are different, which I believe they are between a V6 and a V8 trans, then a lot of the parts won't interchange even if both transmissions are WC or NWC.

If you have the tailshaft and the top cover off the trans you can verify WC or NWC by looking at the synchro rings. NWC use brass rings, and in a WC they will be black.

The trans tags are a good start, but I've seen transmissions that had the wrong tags on them. The only way to be 100% sure is to tear down the trans to verify WC or NWC and the gear ratios (count the gear teeth).

No problem, if you need anything else post back or send me a PM. I wish you a speedy and complete recovery. The older I get the more I realize that if you don't have your health you've really got nothing at all, so I feel your pain.
