How do you change your shift points in Auto?

do you have to reprogram the chip,

IS there a lever or what?

I want it to shift at 5000 instead of 4500..

I knows it's got more and want to change the shift point...

thanks.

Car: 1997 Jeep Wrangler

You have to mess with the governor to change shift points. There are three governors available, if you want to get the extra 2-300 rpm out of it, you can grind off a little of the small weight. Compare the two governors you have been using, look at the small weights and see the difference in size. Continue to modify the small weight in the same direction (lighter), remove a little at a time & this will do the trick. Most people who want the exact rpm WOT shifts have to do this, it will take some work.

If I try to shift it manually it will still shift by itself at 4500RPM.

I had it rebuilt...

thanks

I have replaced the centrifical governor in my tranny and I also have a 92 TBI car. what the deal is, is I put a hotter cam in my car and it pulls to 5600rpms now, but it was shifting too soon when I left it in drive. I replaced my old one with the GM part# for a stock 1992 Z28 with a tuned port 350, and 3.23 gears. Now my car shifts too late @ 6000rpms. but this is because I have 2.73's I'm going to assume. Once I do my gear swap, I should be fine. Before I replaced my tranny governor, I was manually shifting where I wanted to. I am going to change it back if the gear swap doesn't get me back where I need to be. In your situation, with the stock cam, but not being able to hold first gear like the stock tranny before a rebuild would, you might try the governor for a 305 tuned port automatic(they had 2.73's). For some odd reason, that one does cost more though, but I think it will shift a tiny bit later than the TBI one will, even though those cars had the stock cam. otherwise you are screwed unless you get the tranny fixed back to stock. One more option is the 1-2 shift servo, but you have to pull the tranny to change it, I try the governor first. It is easy to get to, but the cap is kinda hard to remove, be careful! good luck.
