I have bought a 89 Camaro RS with a 700R4. I believe it is slipping, im pretty positive. But I don't have a job to spend a ton of money on a transmission so I have a couple of questions.

Should I rebuild the Tranny myself with slightly above maintence skills and a Haynes manual?
How Hard is it if I do?
How much should I expect to spend?

Or if there is anyone in the PA Lancaster area if they know anyone who could cheaply rebuild me a tranny or my tranny. I go to college so I can't have the car down for a very long time.

If you haven't rebuilt one before I wouldn't do it yourself. It's really not that hard but there's a lot of "tricks" and tools to do it right. If you can find someone who knows how that's willing to "help" you rebuild it I would definately recommend it because if you're like me I love to learn how to tear Sh*t apart and fix it.

I rebuilt a th350 for my chevelle a few years ago. I had never done it before and I had one of those walkthru videos. It is not insanely hard its just time consuming. It took me two or three days to do it (I approach the unknown very carefully). Just remember to break it in easy.

YOU GO TO COLLEGE?
well take the car into the auto shop and pay a good student - ask the teacher who is good with a trans - to rebuild it WITH YOU HELPING.
it will be cheaper - you will learn something, and you can add a few things you did not have before and still be under budget.
and you always have the shop teacher to ask questions of.

Well how would he ever learn to do it himself? You aren't just born with the knowledge and skill to rebuild a transmission, especially an automatic one.

It isn't that hard. I avoided them for years for fear that there was alien technology in them that you had to have gone to school in Roswell to learn how to understand. Well the truth about aliens may be out there, but the truth about your trans is that they aren't that hard to build. If you wouldn't shy away from an engine build I'd say go for it. There are several good books and videos out there. You need about $80-$100 worth of special tools to do it, but you don't need all the tools shown in the Haynes or GM books. I highly recommend the Pro-Built trans kit. At $575 it's a great deal and good up to about 600HP. Throw in a decent non-lockup converter and you can have all of this done for around $1,000. That's the same price as a budget rebuilt 700R4, but yours will have all the good parts and you will be able to say you did it yourself.
