how do I remove stuck pressure reg. in th700? HELP!!!

how do I remove stuck pressure reg. in th700? HELP!!!

I installed my B&M **** kit today, and it definetly didn't go as easy as they make it sound. When I tried to replace the oil pressure regulator spring, the unit got stuck and won't come out. I removed the snap ring, but that plug is stuck in there. For a while I was able to move it up and it would fall back down to the same place. The "distructions" say if this happens to gently rap on it with a rod and a mallet, which I did, and now the thing is stuck even higher in the case then it was at first. What do I need to do now, I haven't had the guts to try to remove the front pump cover, but will this approach even allow me to access the regulator, to try to push it down? Do tranny shops have any special tricks, like maybe using a suction cup to extract this thing? Please give me any possible solutins you can think of. thanks

I just found out this question was asked earlier this month. If the trans isn't on the car, are there any ways to get the sleeve out, I've thought of a suction cup or a magnet (if it's magnetic). Any other ideas?

To be clear on this, are you talking about the actual PR valve or the boost valve that is above the snap ring? If it is the boost valve, take the ring off and use a pocket knife to clear up anything that might interfere with the valve coming out. Now you can usually work the valve up and down against the spring with the end of you r screwdriver until it finally pops out. If it is the actual PR valve (after the spring) it will not be so easy. Try as other said with a pair of needle nose pliers, makeing sure the valve stays straight. Otherwise, well you always wanted to see what the insede of a 700 pump lookedlike, right?

You do realize that this is your punishment for getting a B&M NON-shift kit, right?

I believe the part that is stuck is what B&M refers to as the "sleeve" in their instructions. To best describe it, I can say that it is the first part that is supposed to come out after the snap ring is removed. What kind of problems might I run into if I pull the pump off? If I take the ten bolts off the cover shouldn't the pump just come right off and I can access the reg., or not? Sounds like I might wanna try that first if that will even help, since the trans is not in the car yet. Nobody likes my suction cup idea, eh? lol. Well, thanks for the advice, I'll have all week to think about it untill I go back home to deal with it on the weekend.

Just had one more thought- How important do you think it is to use B&M's replacement spring instead of the one that is already in the pressure regulator? If the assembly will get pushed out under pressure, then I could essentially put the snap ring in, fill it with fluid, start it and let the pressure push the PR in place and call it a day. My only concern is that the other mods that I did in the shift kit might need the correct pressure via. the B&M spring. Let me know if this sounds reasonable. thanks

Like stated in the other post about this, I never tried it but it'd be worth leaving the snap ring out, putting the filter and pan back on it and filling it with fluid, start the engine and put it in reverse, it should push the PR valve train out. Use the spring in the B&M kit.
The problem with removing the pump is the possibilty of ripping the pump gasket, you can't buy one at a regular parts store and some trans shops may not want to break a gasket kit up, it's just a pain finding a gasket. Then if you break the lockup solinoid thats $35. Anyway it's not much easier to remove the sleeve with the pump off.

Thanks guys, guess I'm gonna have to do what you said and put it in the car and run it w/o the ring. I wasn't sure, but I figured that pump gasket wouldn't be hard to come by. - Randy

...Yeah, I know it's a $h!tstain term, but it's true, I changed everything except for the heads and cam, and I'm still running 15's. To make matters worse, my buddy who I go to the track with pulled a 15.4 1/4mile with his stock T-turd turbo coupe when my trans was out of comission. These cars were designed to go fast, but between the weak motor and the 115mph speed governor, they don't really do anything except handle well in stock trim. I sure do love my 325 miles per tank though! later- Randy
