700R4 Broke 1-2 Accumulator spring

i was just wondering what causes this problem? When I put a transgo kit in my old '86 700R4 trans it was broken. Just dug into my '88 probuilt 700R4 yesterday and it was broken!

Re: 700R4 Broke 1-2 Accumulator spring

Was it the "orange" spring that broke?

Re: 700R4 Broke 1-2 Accumulator spring

its a very busy spring. mine broke also. i think its mainly an engineering flaw. gm wanted that spring to soften the shift but its too weak to take the pressure. thats my guess...

How do you know when it broken? Will it not shift or shifts soft? I have a built 700 and dont need this happening.

Re: 700R4 Broke 1-2 Accumulator spring

I am contimplating eliminating this spring for competition use. But just seems to be a problem every time I pop open a valve body. According to PATC this spring is supposed to give the firmest shift, I am wondering if they make a sleeve or something for it.

these springs always break. Green, orange, blue, doesn't matter. I always sleeve mine. I make my own sleeves.

Re: 700R4 Broke 1-2 Accumulator spring

the B&M kit uses sleeves. which is why they have hard shifts all the time.

Re: 700R4 Broke 1-2 Accumulator spring

Wouldnt just removing this spring give you the hardest shift for a race application? Or is still ideal to run a spring?

Atilla the fun: what do you make your sleeves out of?

Re: 700R4 Broke 1-2 Accumulator spring

you need the piston centered. so you need something. i want to take my sleeves out and put springs back in. i hate that hard shift when im driving slow.

Re: 700R4 Broke 1-2 Accumulator spring

I space the piston with custom aluminum blocks, so the piston lives on the separator plate. I love the part throttle upshifts chirping the tires. It makes people turn and look. It saves gas and tickets not having to go WOT to get the chirp. I love the tail end of the car kicking sideways when I do a wOT upshift.
Best to use the B&M kit, but if you have a lathe you can turn your own.

Isn't that rather dangerous in the rain?

Re: 700R4 Broke 1-2 Accumulator spring

Here we modify the hell out of the powertrain... leave the tires for last... .. rain, I laugh at rain!!!!... ..

BTW that is a good point, a firm shift could spin you out, that's if there's no spring... you guys say that if the spring is MIA, you end up with a firmer shift...

the little chirp at part throttle is dangerous if it happens when you're not going straight on a wet road, but the WOT upshift is dangerous anytime the road is wet.
A broken spring makes for a long slow upshift that allows a lot of second gear band slippage.

Re: 700R4 Broke 1-2 Accumulator spring

I don't really know how long mine was broken either. My car was so loud and such a handfull on the street that I never made a WOT shift. I took the car to the dragstrip, then noticed the problem. I installed the b&m shift kit and found the broke spring. Now the only problem is the hard 1-2 shift at all speeds...funny story my girlfriend was riding with me and was taking a drink, the tranny shifted into 2nd and the hard shift made her spill coke all over her face and up her nose...lol...guess the b&m kit is good for a laugh
