Looking at this dipstick always makes me feel dumb. There seem to be too many marks and I'm not sure what corresponds to what.

So I've circled and numbered all the "marks". Can some one please be so kind as to label all the circles. Eg: Full when hot, Full when cold etc.

The second picture shows the back side of the stick onto which are scribed 2 marks. #6 is hard to see in the picture but it's there.

I've searched and searched but couldn't find the answer anywhere. Surely others must have had this problem before.

#1 is low, #2 is full - the rest are meaningless and NOT marks to check fluid with.

the engine has to be running when you check it!

3 & 4 are just dashes between the phrases, not level markings. 5 & 6? Who knows, but do not use them as fluid level checking marks. Only look at 1 & 2, ignore 5 & 6.

OK thanks! Mine reads around the letter F when hot in park and idling. Must be at least 2 quarts too full then!

Read it hot, idling & in Park. /but don't go for a drive, stop & check right away. It will not read 100% correctly because of the fluid having moved through the tranny & sloshing around. Give it a few minutes of sitting at idle for the fluid to "settle".

But if your reading that high? Chances are that it is overfull. Might crack the pan loose & drain some, bolt it back up, check it, then loosen & drain again as needed.

Don't feel dumb. We all gotta start somewhere & learn as we go. Only dumb question is one that isn't asked!

Yeah I definitely overfilled it.

I think i found an easier way to drain it instead of cracking loose the pan....I'm just going to remove that one bolt that holds the speedo gear housing into the tail end and then gently pull on the speedo housing until fluid starts to drain out.

Haven't tried it yet, we'll see how it works.
