Play in rear axles

I have a third gen disc brake ten bolt that I upgraded the chunk in it to a Torsen out of a fourth gen SS. The axles are the correct higher spline axle for the car that work with the torsen unit. I have been chasing a braking vibration and realized there is play in the axles. As in they move in and out about 1/16 an inch. The retainer clips are installed correctly and everything, so I think this is just an issue with the swap to the other chuck.

Does anyone know of a fix for this? I'm assuming I can pull the the lock pin out and the retaining c clips on the axles and put some kind of a spacer on the tip of the axle to eliminate the play? Does anyone make spacers for this? Or does anyone know of another fix for this?

Re: Play in rear axles

1/16" is about right.

There are no "spacers".

Leave it alone and drive it.

Re: Play in rear axles

There is a small amount of play on both sides due to the "C" clip system that is used to retain the axels.

Re: Play in rear axles

Thanks I found that out.... now I just have to figure out what the noise is then? Almost sounds like I have a flat tire sometimes and others it's more of a popping. Only happens when brakes are applied heavily. Not a pulsation, brake hardware is tight and correct. Could this be the posi? If the wheels aren't getting even power it could trigger the posi I suppose? Any other ideas?

Re: Play in rear axles

Probably not.

Posi isn't "triggered" by anything. In most designs it consists of clutches that force the axles to turn at the same speed as the carrier, unless there's sufficient traction to exert enough torque to break them loose. Different carriers require different amounts of torque to "breakaway" but usually it's in the 50 - 80 ft-lbs kind of range.

Sounds almost like separated belts. Try a different pair of rear tires.

Re: Play in rear axles

Tires are new, and that wouldn't pop like it does at slower speeds. I will try another set though just to make sure.

I was speaking of the clutches engaging and possibly causing clutch chatter. I'll add some more friction modifier and see if that helps, and check the pinion nut this weekend to make sure it is tightened correctly.

Any other ideas?

Re: Play in rear axles

Posi clutches don't "engage". There is no "engage" or "disengage". They're permanently mashed together. All they do, is connect the axles to the carrier, by their friction.

What you're describing doesn't sound like it anything whatsoever to do with a posi.

But by all means try another bottle of additive; can't hurt, within reason. (say, less than about 5 bottles, or until there gets to be so much additive that there's not enough lube)

Re: Play in rear axles

Thank you for your help Sofa, just saying that if their is uneven brake pressure that could possibly cause the clutches to slip and thus clutch chatter. I know how a posi works.... just trying to fix a problem here.... thinking about possibilities.

It does not sound anything what so ever like tire belts, but I'm willing to try swapping the wheels/tires, just to eliminate it and make sure.

If anyone has any ideas please chime in, I need some help!
