Gear swap ?? opinions??
Hi all,
I have a 1992 GTA with the factory stock 10 bolt rear with 3.23 gears.
i have a 3200 converter ( coan) with a 700 r4 trans. I am thinking about swapping to 3.73 gears or maybe a 4.10 set . I dont race the car . tho i do like to rip from the stop lights i also wonder if i should consider replacing the axles with "better" ones. I know the factory rears are weak in these cars but so far with over 400 hp ( modded engine ) im still going.
Will upping the gears to 3.73 or 4.10 put more strain on the diff ? thanks for any and all opinions>>>>GTA

If it is a daily driver personally I wouldn't go higher than 3.73.
I was in the same boat as you. I had 3.23s and wanted 4.10s at one point but after alot of research decided against it due to the following reasons:
- High RPM on the highway. Right now at 70MPH I'm turning about 2500RPM with 3.73 gears. 4.10 would have been closer to 2800.
- 3.06 1st gear in the 700R4 paired with a strong bottom end intake will make for extremely difficult traction during hard launches with 4.10s.
- 4.10 would have out me outside my powerband in the 1/4 with TPI (Would have needed to shift into overdrive)
- If we're talking a 7.5 ring gear with 4.10 and higher ratios the ring gear begins to weaken considerably because of the size they have to cut the teeth to to attain the correct ratio.
Hope this helps.
