Hi Everyone,

About a week ago, I pulled into work and went to shift into reverse and heard a noise so I let the clutch out, put it back in and it was fine so I parked. Tonight on my way home I heard a noise hard to describe so I recorded it with my phone, tired the voice recorder as well video. I have converted these to mp3 in hopes someone know what this is.

It only happens sometimes but only when the clutch pedal is pressed to the floor and if I start to let it out the odd time to where it feels like the engagement point is. If I let it out all the way and put back in, the noise stops.

It made the noise on the way home, but once I arrived the only way I could get it to make the noise was to rev the motor with clutch peddle pressed to the floor. You can feel it on the shifter (when the noise is present)

Installed a brand new clutch Spec stage 1 (SC421) with brand new Spec flywheel (SC66S) and they have less than 2750 miles on them. These are easy miles, no power/speed shifting, just daily driving.

It goes into all gears fine and when I drive it works as it should. One time it was a bit hard to go into gear so I didn't force it. I let it back out tired again and went in as it should.

clutch noise: the 1st 3 revs it doesn't do it and it does on the 4th

clutch noise 2: the 1st rev has no noise and the 2nd time I rev it there is noise.

If you didnt locktite the clutch fork T stud bolt, it can back out, because of the pull style clutch it will start to contact the pressure plate sometimes when the clutch is pushed.

Not certain, but its very possible its your issue.

Thanks to everyone, 92z28outlaw was right. it was the pilot bushing.

This was new along with clutch, flywheel and fork. What would cause a brand new bushing to go in such a short time? I want to ensure I'm not in the same place in another 2700 miles.....

How much play was in the input shaft? Is the trans aligned with the motor correctly?

I checked the play before install and it was well within specs for a used T56. There was a bit of play but not much.

I used a Spohn crossmember wouldn't that align it properly? How could it be out of alignment being bolted to bellhousing and the housing bolted to block? Is there anyway to check?

which bushing failed? brass or needle bearing?

Brass bushing, was yours fine after you replaced it? With it all being new, I can't see it how it could have happened

yeah it was fine after,

did you test fit the bushing onto the input shaft before installation?

make sure the tip of the input shaft is smooth,
(no grooves or pits)

apply some grease

The cross member has no relationship to whether the trans in inline with the motor. It 'shouldn't' be out of alignment but there are tolerances with everything mass produced and you could just have it slightly out. They make adjustable dowel pins for this purpose. Do you have a dial indicator?

Thanks no I do not. I thought the member held it at the right angle/position. Thought I read that somewhere and this was one of the issues of making your own. This project was two and a half years coming perhaps I dreamed it.

The above is great to know, I didn't see it mentioned anywhere in the swap threads. Thank you. Is there any other way to check or will I need to look into a dial indicator?

The crossmember does affect the relationship with trans and rear diff's pinion angle. Maybe that's what you're thinking of?

As far as I know, the dial indicator is the only way to check. Sorry.

It's not mentioned probably because most are throwing trans behind fairly stock motors with factory bellhousing/parts. Once you start doing engine machine work, scatter shields you can change the relationship between the crank centerline and the input shaft centerline.

Thanks although my block is older (1985) I had it built mild (320HP) and believe Spec parts are built within LT1 specifications minus the differences for the 2 PC RMS. Spec stated it is next to impossible to have a defective bushing.

Can't believe it, I didn't have a dial indicator so I took my ride to a shop, they re&re the pilot bearing stating the old one was defective and now a couple days later same noise maybe a bit louder, less than 80 miles.
Trying to work it out with shop but manager first told me to drive it to see what happens, I said no as it can damage input shaft, they he asked if I could wait till he gets back, he is off next week and he is the one that didn't sound happy??

yep, been lovin the first 2700 miles. The 6 speed makes a world of difference. Still can't believe it as now I sit and wait a week.....
Anyone know of a good tranny mechanic in the Toronto, Canada or surrounding area?
