t5 problems need help
Hello all, just got a 92 rs 305/5spd also has a 4th gen rear end in it, and I'm having some trans trouble, I've tried searching but haven't come up with my specific problem. I'm a novice so bare with me. The problems I'm having are, while driving its sometimes hard to get in gear and there is a pretty loud whirring noise coming from the trans at idle in neutral as well as in the first 3 gears while driving and coming to a stop. If i put it in first and keep the clutch held in it gets way louder. The shifter also has a large amount of play in all directions even while in gear, its not popping out of gear or anything it just can be moved in all directions. Its very sloppy. And finally something about the clutch seems off to me its kinda squishy and doesn't engage until a couple inches off the floor if that much. So if anyone could help me out as to what this might be I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks,

whirring noise? does it go away when you push the clutch in? if the sound goes away, it's your input shaft/internal bearings... you may need to have the trans rebuilt. if the sound stays when you push in the clutch then i'd say your TO bearing/slave cylinder is not working properly and if it is hard to get in and out/stay in gear still also something internal in the trans. I hope you didn't spend much on the vehicle.

pull the shifter
If there isn't a plastic bushing in the shift lever or the bushing is sheared, cracked or otherwise broken, get a new one. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...r-bushing.html and https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...er-damper.html have some detail.
You may have a worn-out shifter too.
Your throwout bearing is making noise and may be close to the end of useful life.
Squishy clutch may be clutch hydraulic system in need of bleeding.
