Rearend help?

How do you know if your rearend is a posi or open geared?
How much longer is the rearend from a 4th gen V8 camaro than a third gen V8 camaro?

While you're doing the routine maintenance of changing the fluid, like we all do regularly, you look at it and see what the parts are. If you don't know how to recognize them, post a pic. But in general, if all you see inside the carrier is a shaft and 4 small gears, it's open; if you see springs, clutch plates, or other stuff, it's a posi.

1-5/8" on each side.

Re: Rearend help?

If you have a 10-bolt, the following FAQ will answer most of your questions:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...-10-bolts.html

BTW, since most questions have been asked and answered, a search will generally turn up the info you need.

Can you put a pic of an open geared carrier and a posi carrier to distinguish the difference please

3rd gen and 4th gen up through '97 weren't that good because they used the Auburn differential. In '98 they started using the Torsen differential, which is much better. I had a lot of differentail pictures on webshots until they sold out to whatever they are now. I lost all of my pics, so I can't help you with that. Be careful with ebay and some other sights. There are a lot of people trying to pass of the Governor Lock as the Eaton Posi. They are both made by Eaton, but the Gov Lock is far from being as good as the Eaton Posi.
