keep going through speedo gears

Im about to pull my hair out about this issue. I cant keep a speedometer driven gear in my car as it seems to keep chewing them up. Iv gone through 3 in the last week. Iv got a brand new aluminum driven gear housing from patc, have the red 17 tooth drive gear on the transmission shaft and its in good shape, and have installed a new tailshaft seal and bushing. Iv gone through 3 green 42 teeth gears and now a purple 43 tooth. It all starts the same, the speedo will start to bounce between about 10 mphs, then drop off completely while cruising. But taking off from a stop it works untill I cruise again. The transmission shop in town is lost as to what to do. Anyone have a clue before I absolutely have to take my car and leave it at the shop.

Re: keep going through speedo gears

Have them replace the extension housing bushing.

It's not impossible you also need the drive shaft yoke; it may be worn as well, allowing even more side play in the output shaft. If you haven't changed your U-joints lately you probably need to anyway; instead of picking up the old yoke to re-use when putting the front one in, set it aside and pick up a new one instead.

iv replaced that bushing, also installed a new seal. Iv also replaced my joint about a month ago. The only pieces I haven't replaced are the drive gear on the trans itself and the yolk.

Re: keep going through speedo gears

Drive gear is likely in the wrong location on the output shaft. There are two locations for it to be installed, one for our cars, and the other for Corvettes (with a different tail housing).

Use the Corvette location with a 3rd gen tail housing and it tears up the gears.

The gear clip hole that is further toward the front of the transmission is correct for all cars except the Corvette.

RBob.

Re: keep going through speedo gears

That makes sense but the first two gears it took it almost a month to chew through the driven gears, but now bits not even a day to go through them. I'm just at a lost. That makes sense though because I put the gear on the tail shaft and don't remember what hole I put it on.

Re: keep going through speedo gears

have you replaced the 2pc cable assembly yet?

mine was all bound up when i got my car, and Alloy (t56 tailhousing mods) highly recommends the swap for this exact problem.

Re: keep going through speedo gears

yup- the cable binds and either the cable eats itself or the driven gear eats itself. Lucky for you, you dont have the issue of having to find another drive gear (they were discontinued for the T5/T56) and pay the arm and a leg 50ish for the new drive gear.

I mean you can probably grease the speedo cable, but from what i have researched the two pc tends to bind. so go to rockauto and buy the one piece.

Re: keep going through speedo gears

The cable for a stick car is part number CA-3001. It's available from Autozone and Orielly's or about $12 or less.

I lost the gears in my T56 due to the cable binding up, and two of my tail housing customers had the same thing happen to them. That's why I recommend replacing the cables.

And very soon there will be an alternative to the $50 T5 drive gears. I will post when I have them in stock.
