How hard is it to rebuild a 700r-4?I had mine rebuilt 2 yrs ago,but somehow i damaged it and it takes a real long time to go into second and won't go into overdrive at all,I can't afford the $700 i've been quoted to rebuild it so i was wondering how hard it would be to do myself.

Two comments. First I normally spend close to that just in parts so don't think you are going to be saving too much money. You will have to purchase various tools also. Next, if they are spending the same on parts are they are doing this for purely altruistic reasons or perhaps they are cutting corners to maximise profit. You decide.

You can buy a kit to build it, and rent the equipment.
If you can build an engine, you can build the 700r4.

But you only save a few hundred dollars...and give up a possible warranty depending on type of rebuild...plus the PITA.

Mine was rebuilt to high perf. specs for 900 by a local guy.
Otherwise I would have paid 1500-2000 for an aftermarket High performance companies 700r4 .

4 Wheel & Off-Road magazine just had an article in there Dec-01 issue It lists all the tools needed and some good books and videos that will help guide you through it.

If it was a 350 or 400 I'd say have at it. The 700 is a pretty complex tranny - literally 1000's of parts(that's what I've been told). Certainly doable, but you might be better off finding a good used one or save up for the rebuild. For $700 it should be a pretty good one. By the time you by a video, manual, tools, etc. and a kit, you could pay for the rebuilt one.
