Converter death - symptoms?
I've lost all lockup.. I no longer get the 23mph lockup in 2nd gear, and no lockup in 3rd or 4th either. Not only that, but if I floor it, the transmission slips on the 1-2 shift. I am getting a buzzing, knocking type of sound from the area where the tranny and engine meet. I've had a cracked flexplate for a while that I haven't got around to fixing. So is my converter dead? Will I hurt anything by driving it this way? I have 2.73s so it revs at about 1400 rpm in 4th gear at around 50mph.
I'm praying its just the converter and not the tranny.. the tranny has 10k on the last rebuild and has a Trans Go shiftkit. The TC is a no-name aftermarket 2000 stall unit. thank you for any help...
one other thing, what's a good aftermarket TC in the $200 range? I had priced the S10 unit a few years ago and they were around $320 at the local chevy dealer.. too much. thanx again

If you are already having a 1-2 slip, its possible that you might need a rebuild. First look at the fluid & see if its burnt, or has metal in the fluid. If it has metal its history. If it is only slightly burnt, then changing fluid & filter might help. Is the 1-2 slip at part throttle? Did it start to slip when you lost the lockup? Let me know?

The 1-2 slip is at full throttle only, while warmed up. The cold, part throttle 1-2 shift is firm and feels great, like nothing is wrong. There is no slippage in any of the shifts at part throttle. The fluid is perfect.. just the right shade of red, zero metal on the dipstick. The tranny is still new, 10k on a $1200 rebuild by a very reputable local shop. thanx...

It may be your band is worn, or the seals in the servo are leaking. The band is responsable for the 1-2 shift and the 3-4 shift, although the 1-2 seems to bring out the gremlins first.
I had the same problem with my trans awhile back. I would have to lift for the 1-2 shift to catch, and then I could get back into the gas. No "massive" amounts of metal in the pan, but on dissasembly, the rivets that hold the band material were making contact with the drum.
