What Exhaust Do You V6 Guys Have

IM TRYING TO FIND THE RIGHT EXHAUST FOR MY V6. I WANT IT TO BE LOUD MORE THAN GIVING ME PERFORMANCE.

Dynomax 2.5 cat back sounds nice... in my opinion, better than a flowmaster 40 series

I have a 2.5" Vortex Cherrybomb cat-back exhaust. Sounds nice, deep, and low. Doesn't sound rasphy all. The CAI really helped my exhaust sound better, but it still sounded good before that. I've been meaning to digitally record it, but I haven't gotten around to it...

If you want to to be loud pull off the Y-Pipe and the rest of the exhaust but theave the manifolds on.

I ramped a curb once (not on purpose) and it tore the Y-Pipe out, its ok untill you pass 2,000 RPM, that and the cops dont like it to much or the neighbors.

Obtain a "custom designed" Hi Flo manifold to CC "Y" pipe.
I'm building one, using a 1980's Volvo manifold to CC pipe (twin long parrellel pipes, to a smooth common one, with great 90* J bends)
New CC from Don's Hot Rod (Performance for Power $59 +ship 800-888-8892) 2 1/2" in-n-out.
From a 80's/90's V-8 Camaro (Z-28 TransAm) the intermeidate pipe, it's 2 3/4", Guaranteed to fit & usually cheaper as a throw away!
Add muffler of your noise level. I have a noname twin exiting muffler (one perside) sounds nice, was on car, works goods.
I have a Flowmaster on my S-10 Blazer 2 chamber. I wish it was a 3 chamber.
I have to add the custom Y pipe & the intermeidaite pipe to my set up.

I almost bought headers last night for the Blazer 3.4 swap.
They weren't METAL WELDED tagged with the CARB number, so they WOULD NOT pass SMOG TEST IN CA.

Side Question

More then one of you have mentioned the "Products for Power high-flow bolt-in cat." So I'd have to assume that's something good to go with. Right now as you read I have a 2.5" Cherrybomb Vortex cat-back exhaust. Would that cat just bolt right into this? All the pipes before the cat are stock. (As of now) Also would you say it helps performance? I figure anything helps!

My exhaust guys stepped up the stock cat size on my car. I have a flowmaster and have 4 square tips centered under the plate off the back.

I have bben told by many people it is the best sounding 6 they have everheard. Most swear its and 8.

I don't know what makes it sound better than the other flowmasters on 6s, but it really does sound better. Could be the routing of the tips otr the larger cat.

I will be getting some shots of the car from below when it goes up on the lift tomorrow at the exhaust shop. I'm getting the subframe conectors installed.

hey redraif,

have u ever run the 1/4 mile man... ur intake i just wanted to know if it made that much of a difference??

i got ported stock manifolds and a stock y pipe no cat 2 1/2" intermediet pipe and a daytona turbo muffler. i think it sounds great but its only one outlet. it gets real troaty soundind at when you are at mid throtle and when accelerating

Whew my 1/4 time. That's so embrassing. I wish I could tell you if it made a difference. I have run it, but its not good. The 2.8 is very sick.

I had the 2.8 rebuilt after it turned a rod 2 years ago. It was around 110,000 miles. It has run like crap ever since. The mechanic was an idiot and it had to be rebult again @ 120,000 miles by the dealership because it turned a rod again. (no charge) It has had a backfire I have been chasing for a year and a half. Not to mention an irritanting exhaust leak we could not seal.

We have replaced, tuned, and checked everything on the exterior of the engine. Only thing left is something inside the engine.

I tell you that before I announce what I ran. Its an automatic & fuel injected. Only had about 10,000 on it since the 2nd rebuild. I took it to the track for the first time last fall. It was a warm day, not hot, humidity: mild. Car was cool. No burn out. I was on the gas and brake to get the RPMs up. My boyfriend says I had a good strong launch. The tires gripped, no spin at all.

The sad, but true result: 18.91. I got exactly 18.91 all 4 times. No deviation. Reaction times varied since it was my first time, but the 1/4 mile time was the same.

My mods at the time. Cold air induction, flowmaster, high capaciy cat, K&N fliter, AC Delco rapid fire plugs, 245/45/R17 BFGoodrich tires, 17in chrome rims.

I plan to go back on April 28th. We have worked some more on the backfiring, mildly ported the exhaust manifolds, fixed teh exhauset leak, I have the Functional SunCoast Ram Air hood, MSD coil, Taylor 8mm wires, breathers on the valve covers, egr disabled, intake coolant bypass, we replaced the suspension (polyurathane bushings, larger sway bars, eibach proline springs, Genatelli lower control arms, Herb Adams adj. panhard bar, Subframe conecters, Edlebrock strut tower brace)

So we will see in a week and a half...

that cold air shouldve helped ya...but tell you what why not cover the top of the filter ..the place where ur filter shows off...behind ...the fan...try it ...

I tell you this much the car is too heavy. Is that new hood fiberglass or not. Just looking at the car I can tell you its too heavy, the rims are 17 inchers which are alot along witht the 245mm/17R which will really slow you down. You need too take like everything out of the car to speed it up because thats what is killing you. Also isn't it lowered or something too that Wouldn't help. Take out the the A/C and relocate teh battary to the rear. Than get a nice 3.4L w/ NOS and than it will speed up alot. Your going to need big mods on that engine to make it move like it should.

Well considering there is a good chance its something internal, I will probably opt for a V-8 before I try to eek power out of this engine. If fact I have strongly considered the swap. I hope to do it before the end of the year.

I just couldn't believe the difference in my times compared to the others who were running stock. I figured worse case I had traded the extra power from exhaust and intake on the rim weight. I felt it still should have run 17s. Yes, the hood is fiberglass.

The engine just does not feel as strong as it did a few years ago. It won't even do a burnout. This all happened after the rebuild.

I assume you checked timing; did the mark on the balancer move? Did you check TPS voltage? How's the pump pressure? Is the cat clogged? How's the air gap betwen the reluctor and the pole pieces (all are part of the distributor)? Did the mechanic put the timing chain in "straight up", or did he advance/retard the cam timing?

What was the rest of your slip? (60 foot, 1/8th mile, etc) Maybe there's a spot on the slip that matches up with the rest of us, and it's only the ending that's worse. Like, maybe you have a better 60 foot time than I do, but a worse quarter.

Dealership checked the timing before & after as a favor. 3X it was checked in 3 mo. It's set correctly, so timing was fine. TPS was replaced before hand and was working properly. Car has a new fuel pump. Cat flowing just fine had it checked last week. The car passed emissions with flying colors. They were amazed a 2.8 did that well. Would knowing those results help?

The dealership never checked the distributer. They believed it was fine. I will check that angle out. We may just yank one out of a low mileage 3rd gen from a junk yard and swap them to see what happens.

And I did not ask him about the advancing or retarding of the cam timing. We are afraid that may be the problem. There is so much to pull off to get to it that we are going to wait as a last resort.

I will get my slips tonight and post all the results.

I will also be going to the track Sunday. I will be sure to let you know what the car runs now.

The TPS could've slipped out of adjustment; just offering something else to check. And if you're going to go through all the trouble of pulling a junkyard distributor, you might as well just rebuild yours... the hardest part of the rebuild is putting the distributor back in, which you've gotta do anyway, even if you get a junkyard one. Also if you've got an automagic, you could check the setting of the TV cable. You could always try a run with "normal sized" wheels & tires, too. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice TomP. I plan on checking into it.

I wanted to put my stock rims back on for the heck of it, but I can only change the fronts. The adapters in the rear have a slight issue at the moment. Steel bolts with billet aluminum. No one said to use antiseize. Yuck!

We have fixed the fronts, but I have to drill the heads off the countersunk bolts that hold the 2 adapter plates together in the rear still. Its no prob, just time consuming. One more thing to add to the list.

I wish I could win the lottery so I didn't have to work. Then I could find the time to fix all this fun stuff.

I plan on eventually doing a 3.4L swap w/ NOS and maybe a supercharger eventually, or a ZZ4 swap which is a great engine. THe problem is money, both swaps require a ton of money and there isn't a chance in hell I'm doing a carbed V8 swap cause I can't really stand carbed engines very much. Hopefully after college when I'm mamking big bucks in the computer buissness I will be able to do it, but for now I'm driving my formula.

TPS is fine. We double checked it.

Timeslips. OK. My brain was aparently Dyslectic or it was wishful thinking on those 1/4 mile times. It wasn't 18.9 like I thought, it was 19.8.

So here is the spread: pay most attention to the 2nd and 3rd passes. I could not find my other 2 slips from the day, but the time was the same as the 2nd and 3rd.

This was my first time at the track. Hence the reactiion times being all over. I was experimenting to see what light I needed to go on.

We have blocked off the EGR system since it kept leaking. Don't know if any of this helps.

i've got a hooker........ errrr, the aerochamber exhaust that is. it sounds mean, and just gets better the more you drive it. not too loud so as to annoy you, but loud enough to catch the attention of others around you. it's actually quite relaxing. sometimes i just drive with the music off and listen to my baby pure. whatever suits your fancy i guess, but i love hookers........ errrr... again i mean the aerochamber.
