I just saw/killed the largest f'ing spider I've ever seen in my life! And I had the digital cam ready as proof- I know this is off topic and I don't mind that it's locked and I'm sorry for posting it but holy f'ing crap... I'm all twitchy now. I mean where did it come from?!? Damn. I'm used to "big" spiders- but not this big. Geez.

HOLY CRAP!!!! That is one HUGE spider! Looks like a wolf spider. I don't really have a problem with spiders, unless they jump on you, THEN YOU SCREAM LIKE A LITTLE GIRL!! Haha! Crazy 8 legged freaks!! By the way, is anyone going to see that movie! Nice kill by the way!!

Haha, yeah, I was running around here like a little girl... I didn't know how to kill it, then I thought of the box, I brought the box over, then I went back and put things inside the box, stared at it for a bit, dropped the box on it, took about 2 minutes to look under the box, and another few minutes to compose myself. Funny thing is, the spider never moved. And it took me at least 5 minutes to get the box all ready. I still can't believe how big it looks in that first picture from so far away.

Uh... I mean.. I killed it with my BARE HANDS! No box involved! It was all ME! I was NEVER freaked out! Not once!

I have seen one that was living under a deck for over 7 years. Had a nice little nest and everything. I(and freinds) chased it out and it had the length of a 10 1/2 size SHOE!

out back in the woods, we have these 1000 legger things, and i was cleaning up a wood pile, an i saw this 1.5 inch wide, 4 inch long 1000 legger... it squirmed like a snake...
damn thats a big spider, imagine that thing biting you. my friend got bitten on the ear by some kind of spider and it swelled up the size of a golfball

Thats the size of one of those spider rings I had for halloween as a kid! I've seen big spiders, but thats insane. I would move out of the house if I were you. There might be more.

Tom I know what you mean. I have seen a spider that big before. When I lived with my dad out in the country. I saw the suckers sneaking around my dresser. He saw me, I saw it and we both froze.

I did the same as you trying to decide how to kill it. The closest thing was an unopened can of pop. I took that can of pop and smoked that sucker with it hard. Wipped it as hard as I could, have no idea why it did not explode.

And the spider lived and ran away. Boy was it hard sleeping for a while knowing he could be creaping around looking for payback. I smoked him hard and I bet he did not live long, but he got away.


I use lots of poison around my house. Some good all purpose kill em all spray. Mixed it up and do the entrie yard,grass, bushes, and the house inside and out. And during the peak of the bug season I will mix some up and spray at night when all the bugs come out.

Hehe dont i know it, same thing happened to me 2 days ago. This monster was running fast across my rug, i quickly ran and dropped a plastic cup on it. While i was looking for something else to put it in, it some how managed to escape. I never did find it.

Oh man, just thinking about those things wanting payback gives me the heeby jeebies! (Has anyone heard of that before?) One time I saw a cockroach in my room about 5 inches long! You know those huge ones with the wings that fly at you when you try to smash it! I hate cockroaches as well!!!

I know it'll freak some of you out, but I TRY to keep 4-6 small spiders(couple wolf and rest web makers) to help keep other bugs OUT. They do a great job too. My house is clean, but the neighbor's(accross the street) well... NOT so the bugs tend to migrate from their house.

Put it this way, last year a house they own(purly for storage for more of their crap) cought fire, the neighborhood instantly had a Norway RAT problem. My dog got 2(chased and corned I killed with a stomp of a boot) and neighbors got 15 total. Guy next to me got 6! Couple houses down got 9!
And yes the burned out hulk of the **** house is still there with a big *** blue tarp on the roof!

You should try sleeping when you can HEAR them chewing through the walls!

Rats chewing on walls?! That must be annoying as hell! We don't have a problem with rats in houses in Tucson. Right now, we have a problem with little b!tch fire ants getting in!

Gumby, I was going to throw a book at it- but I figured I'd either miss, or the spider would catch the book and throw it back. Was that one a wolf spider, too? (Elevario, I went back, and yeah, looked like a wolf spider. It had the striping on its legs- man those legs were hairy!)

A few weeks back we were working on my car in the car port and I saw this spider teh size of Tom's, but it was not a lean skinny wolf spider. Oh no it had the same leg span, but this fellow was quite portly. His body and legs were 2x the thickness of the wolf spider. I was freaked. Joe wanted to kill it, but I figured it had friends. Plus you never know how far they can jump. So I left him be and avoided that side of the car. Joe chased him around the corner of the house, but I was still watching out for the return.

Then 2 days ago,we saw a mud dauber the in the carport. He was on the wall dragging a big balled up thing. We walked over and darn it if it was not another one of those spiders. I have not a clue how it could drag something this big across the ground, let alone vertically on a wall. we watched him go about his business. I felt a bit better knowing teh big spider was gone. Just imagine the feast those baby Daubers are going to have.

Then about 7-8 years ago a freind was replacing a blown head gasket on my car. Long story, but he had he car 9 mo. Well, when I finally got it back I needed a new catalytic converter. I went to my muffler guys. While they were cutting away at the pipes a little friend crawls out. Its a black widow spider. I have never seen 2 grown men scream like that. One started to try to burn it with the gas torch. The other grabbed a can of PB Blaster type stuff. They killed that one and here came its mate. We got them both, but they will never forget my car.

Once I was working on my car late at night and I looked up and on the edge of the hood was a Preying Mantis. This was no ordinary PM. It had to be 4-5 inches long. It kept flying around chasing bugs too. It swooped a bit too close and I started swinging the dremel at it. But it was smaill compared to one that was on this guys car at the resturant I waitressed at. He came running back inside white faced. There was, Iwas told, a foot long Mantis on his car. I never saw the thing except thru the window. One of teh girls went out there and chased it off for him. She said it was big, but not quite a foot. They freak me out the way they look at you.

No problemo . If I were you , Id go to the hardware store and see if they have something that's safe to spray inside , so if there is anymore of them , there gone hopefully after you spray ! My Dad got bitten by a spider a long time ago , he was REAL sick , running fever , throwing up , flying $hits , headaches . Did you find him at work or at home ? Shoot , Id spray at work ! Or ask the boss if the exterminator could come .

Headaches? The bite didn't turn swollen and red/white/blue colored, did it? That could've been a brown recluse bite if his skin turned those colors... dangerous spiders.. if you guys get bit by one, go to the hospital quick!

They look like wasps, but they supposedly don't sting, but one got me the other day at pull-a-part. They are redish orange in color with black wings. Same size as the average wasp. They build nests that look like long tubes. They are made of mud or dirt. Hence Mud Dauber or Dirt Dauber.

No thats not what killed him, my freind froze as it stopped beside his shoe tring to hide!. He jumped the spider ran, and we all ran away.
I went back the next day and looked around its nest(I found little BONES! like mice and small bird type stuff), I heard hissing and tore A$$ outta there. I mean that things "fatty" abdomen was the size of my flat open palm! all I did was this getting outta there.

I have gone to a few pet stores, and I am not all that uncertain the damn thing was not a trantula that got loose outta its cage!

If any of you guys want to try an interesting experiment .... find a nice heavily wooded area, then find a nice old canvas tent without a floor and set it up in the woods, then wait about two weeks.

I have done this and tell you I have never seen so many spiders (100s, maybe more than a 1000) in one place at one time in my life. Some were easily 6 inches across. I'm told that all these spiders normally live up in the trees and they're just never seen. I now truely belive that they are there. I guess the habitat I created was somehow better than a tree.

After reading this most interesting post...I now realize how scared of spiders I am...as much as I hate to admit it...I'm a hardcore arachnaphobic...I mean...little white spiders smaller than a fingernail scare the crap out of me...If I had ever seen the black widows or the one that Tom killed...I more than likely would have ran away and never returned...Up here in Rhode Island though...we don't have much of a spider problem...there usually little for the most part...except one that lived under my couch...it was about as big as my palm and was black...my father basically walked up to it and picked it up with a towel then let it out into the woods...it never returned...but aside from the spiders...I was pulling a bumper cover off a 'Bird in the boneyard for my friend...and of course...bees...who seem to follow me everywhere I go...just happened to have a nest under there...there was only two and the nest was rather small...They were nested on the shock absorber...I was so scared and just kept working...the damn things never bothered me...I hate bugs and are damn scared of spiders and bees for that matter...and if you ever saw me...you'd think I wasn't scared of anything...oh well...I enjoyed the stories though...talk to ya'll lata...

Shoot ! I'll tell you something else I dont like is snakes !!! ...When I use to do landscape work , I was prunning some azalia bushes one day , after I finished , one of my co-workers walked over and looked at them and found a big snake curled all up in the same bushes I had just cut . If I would have seen that snake while I was cutting them I prabaly would have passed out , just from seeing it ! ....You guys know I live down in Louisiana , and alot of people just think thats country , its country and city just like every other state . But I am the BIGGEST CITY BOY , I will tell you that . I dont like anything small , and Im not a big fan of going out in the woods with the creepy crawlies .

One day me and my dad went to pick up his new project car a 85 fiero whell We were driving along when I felt some thing fall on my leg. Thinking it was just one of the many loose wires that fell out of the dash I reaced down with out looking and I felt this thing on the back of my hand. It was a huge spider. not as big as toms But I was big anough. It started to run up my arm. So I'm trying to bat this thing off of my arm while driving it was not fun.

yea Tom Im sure it was a wofl spider. Only ones that get that big in ohio.

I have seen one bigger but it was only cause it had real long legs, it was out side our back door. It made a web about 6 foot in dia.

I have a little tech for this .... I have a pet spider , when it slows down and stops crawling , it wants to turn right , is he in need of a front end alignment ?

He also gets slugish sometimes when he takes off ? I was thinking this is fuel filter ?

I used to work at a chemical plant where we would find all kinds of mutated spiders, rats, and even one 5-legged kitten born in the warehouse. BTW, I've been reading these boards for a few months now, and just now registered, but I'd like to thank everyone for the useful info I've found that's helped me convert my worn-out F-body to a decent driver.

It may just be me, but because of the fact that I grew up in the country animals of any nature really don't bother me that much. Granted if something startles me I will scream like a little school girl, but if I know it's there I will play with it, kill it, or maim it for fun. I have been bit by a spider once, and it was not pretty, made a knot about the size of a racquet ball on my back, and hurt like hell too.
I do remember the last time I was startled and screamed like a school girl. I was cleaning out the boot pit at the grain elevator with a grain vac, and there just happened to be a couple hundred rats down there, well one got scared and ran up my pant leg. Oh man I've never screamed louder in my life, while trying to trap the little bastard and getting him to run back out. Needless to say I had to clean my shorts out after that one.


BTW Tom that is a HUGE spider, and this is a great post.
