Custom plenum update

I thought I'd post an update as to how this project is going (been awhile- I'm very busy in life with many projects) This is just a spare hobby in free "me alone time".

Anyways, I worked out the IAC fit no problem and am getting ready to finish grinding, rounding, and polishing up the inside edges and buttoning up the top soon.

Just a totally new upper. The base and middles are fully ported stock units- They have a great "straight shot" into the heads from the plenium. By shortening the runner lengths and increasing the plenium volume, I hope to widely broaden the torque curve.

MIG aluminum welding- And a hole *&^%load of grinding and water testing for leaks. You can not achieve appearance welds with mig aluminum. Only structure welds and a whole lot of splatter- I use a 75%argon/25%helium gas which helps a little over straight argon.

Damn, you're gonna have one center piece to talk about at meets 2.8! I wish I was close enough to come and see your car. I would love to see how she handles since i want to do a full suspension make over on my car.

Tips? Just wing it- Its a trial and error thing, no one else has done one for one of these motors. I am using JB Weld on the inner weld beads and then gringing and polishing them smooth for flow-pic attached-note: thats a 62mm TB, look at the flow volume.

As for testing it? I'm in no hurry, car runs great right now- I have many other house projects and a serious Scuba diving habit that take most of my free time- Will be out chasing lobsters for three days next weekend for that matter on Oct4,5,6 and then my next free weekend I have to help setup Thunderfest ( A major car show and exibit I help out and Judge each year- over 600 cars and playboy playmates even. Jesse James is booked to be there also this year) Patience- It will be on the car within the year as well as the headers etc...

Thankyou for the compliment Techsmurf- but he is right on my spelling error- I guess it is plenum-opps.

I won't erase any more pictures unless I am asked to. I have all progress pictures saved on my computer if ever someone wanted to reference something.

I hope to have a little time next week to finish the runner porting (at least the top part- and do a gasket match template) so I can button the lid onto the plenum and then get it sent off soon for ceramic coating. I keep asking for everyones patience- this is only a free time project amongst many others.

Please don't frikin call me "MR." agood. I just turned 37 on Friday and its starting to hurt.

you gonna test run it before you send it to get it coated? i want to see how much it helps you.

Yes I plan to test it first- but not with the ported middle and bottom manifolds. I am not taking it apart for all that, only bolting the top piece to the stock middle and lower manifolds on the 2.8 motor just to check function and stability of idle (no leaks)- then its off to the coaters'.

Here's a pic of the ported runners and plenum match- Note the comparison of the stock runner size of the stock plenum. I still have to do final sanding and rounding of port mouth, this is just to show maximum port size openings.

if you can have gotten a hold of a TIG welder....wouldn't that have been the better route to go...? I mean....there is not one spatter of anything when you use a TIG....just a thought.

Here's a thought....why don't you loan me yours? Just a thought.

I'm not about to spend $1500+ on a TIG welder for this experimental project when I aready own a MIG and it will do the job good but not great.

So... nobody wants bigger runner ports on their list ? Just getting back on topic- I was so proudof my work I had to post it, thought they are figgin huge. I focused on rounding out the inner material to keep integrety of the wall strength, rather than just larger square ports. (radius' are stronger than squarish corners )

I like the way that looks. What motor is this going on? What specs? Power adders or high compression? Cam?

It will be a 3.4 base 10.1:1 compression maybe(damn iron heads- I'd like to still be able to run pump gas)- but the rest is kind of my little secret for now and still being pondered. I am ceramiccoating everything in hopes to keep the running temps low, But its not going to help the cylinder temp much at all if any, and increasing coolant flow to help fight predetionation. I may decide to increase the compression ratio- but may have to pull it back down and mill the pistons if it knocks without racing fuel. It will be exotic, no expense spared (except I'm not dumping a few thousand into an aluminum block, I don't think.). I haven't started on the shortblock yet- I don't even own a 3.4 block yet- but have many many exotic parts to go with it so far. I will test it on the current 2.8 slightly modified here and there- mainly bolt-ons though. Car has a fully built drivetrain/suspension in case you aren't familiar with it- fully built! If you have seen pics of the cars' undercarraige, you then know I do stuff right. I haven't come this far not to complete a motor.

Also as I have stated before, the PFE headers will go on the new motor as well- not wasting my time on the 2.8. It does have 1.52 rockers however and some polishing work done to the existing ports- exhaust manifolds are basically stock and are choking the heck out of it.

Edit: the motor internals are going to cost me about 3k more and I'm done with this car. No, I don't want a cheaper V8 motor, that has been done too many times- this hasn't. I actually had a good used 350 TPI complete with harness (everything) for free that I gave away but kept the TPI intake and harness for an El Camino that I have.

In conclusion- I'm having way too much fun with this car(wifes grocery getter for those who don't know- she loves this car) I may decide to just buy her a new car (Range Rover or maybe an H2 See how business goes this year) and retire this from her- If that happens (which I think it may) I will pump the heII out of the motor to full race (11.6:1). Regardless of compression ratio, it will be a 7000+ rpm motor.

Done grinding and polishing the upper runner mouths- Neighbors must love me- compressor running all evening- I have to get over to the family shop and bring home the MIG to button on the top, then tap the vacuum fitting and fab the throttle bracket fitting- No EGR - I plan to delete that in the chip. Also have to gring out a groove underneath for a 90* fitting of the schraeder valve for a fuel pressure gauge to fit- this won't be fun. Here's the polished port pics- I rounded the opening edges and polished the inside a bit to clean things up.

He hasn't done anything on it since he last posted about it. He says it's at the bottom of his list. I didn't find that he was too happy about being asked about it either. If he decides to email me ever again and tell me about it, I'll pass the info on.
