B&M Shift Improver Kit

Has anyone tried this thing? It's not really a shift kit but it is suppose to help your transmission shift qiucker and better. I have one I bought a while ago but have not gotten around to installing it. A friend of my dad who is a mechanic said it would be pointless on a V6. Any one have any input? Should I install it? Those who have it, are you happy with its performance? My transmission is in pretty good shape. I can gun the car and the tranny will shift around 6500 RPM.

i have that kit in my car. it works pretty good. the 1-2 shift is really nice. the 2-3 could just be my tranny, i'm not real sure. it was pretty easy to install too. just a thought, if you can get it to shift any sooner, it'll play to your advantage. we don't make much power above about 5500, especially on a stock cam.

oh yea, i forgot which cam you had. my tranny shifts at like 6000-6500 but i don't like that and i can't get it to shift sooner without it slipping worse unless i left off the gas just a hair for a sec.

I really need to write a tech artical (el cheapo shift kit, the right way)

Ok first off, tell your Dads friend to get out of that "shade tree" and get a real job. If he really works for a shop I pitty that place. You can tell him SSC said so too.

A shift improver kit will help any car. B&M is on the very bottem of the list since it only make the transmission shift harder and a tad quicker mostly harder. Transgo would be choice here since it improves the transmission and fixes known problems. Again the B&M kit only makes it shift harder.

What I would suggest since you have this kit already and probably will use it reguardless of what anyone says is to do the following.

Install the HD option only. Do not install the line bias blocker for any reason take it out of the kit toss it in the trash. Remove the MTV spring as per directions. If you feel up to it replace the pressure regulator spring do it as per directions. If not, it makes very little difference since its only slightly firmer then OEM spring. Drill the right holes dont make a mistake and make sure they are nice and clean before you install the VB.

Now the trick part, accumulator spacing. There is no exact setup and the B&M way will give you a rock solid usually way to firm 1-2 but a bla 3-4 shift. Ive found many different combos that result in nice equaly firm shifts in all gears, one that works well is the yellow 5/8 spacer in the 1-2 and the blue 3/4 in the 3-4. If 3-4 is realy weak to start with and there is no current transmission problems you could either add a red 3/8 to that combo or file down the red so you have a total of 1in spacing in the 3-4.

I'm not going to edit my previous post since I just read this after the fact. Good usefull information up there.

You have problems. Installing this kit will only make them worse. You could try another governer with heavy weights and firmer springs to get it to shift sooner but I think its deeper then that. These shift kits only reduce lag time and firmness between shifts not shift timing.

i am not doubting the info you posted above but i'm not going to say that my tranny problems are because of the b&m kit. my tranny problems are probably more along the lines of...its an old tranny that's probably never been touched other than when i had the VB out to do the shift improver kit.

It's not pointless to improve the trans on a v6 car, or even a 4 cylinder- a transmission is a transmission, if you can improve it, you'll go faster.

I put the B&M Shift Improver Kit into my car back in 1997, before I knew about thirdgen.org- and before I knew how bad that kit is for the trans. Take it back and buy the TransGo Shift Kit for $120; the TransGo kit will improve your trans the "right way". When I rebuild my trans, I'll put the TransGo kit in.

The B&M was easy enough to put in, as long as you're not skittish about going into your trans. You should have the GM Service Manual or the ATSG manual though. (This is one of those instances where I wouldn't tell anyone to use the Haynes book.) It made my car feel like a different animal! I expected harder shifts, but the car actually shifted faster, and downshifted faster. It was a hell of a ride! Of course, this happens (and the shifts feel harder) because the kits take the "slop" out of the trans. And with that slop, the trannies shift quicker.

And back to the "pointless for a v6" idea, then I've really been pointless- I put in a B&M Megashifter, B&M Supercooler, B&M Shift Improver Kit, B&M 4-3 Kickdown Kit, and a Summit Remote Trans Filter.

You should really consider returning it and buying the TransGo kit, though.

I wouldent say your problems are a direct result of the kit either. It is possible if it wasent acting like that before under WOT passes it might be from the install. Its not unheard of for gaskets to rip or bolts to work themselfs loose causing fluid to bypass certain shift valves creating the problem you have.

Where abouts can I find and purchase this Trans Go kit? I am changing my trannsmission fluid/filter in the next week, thought it would be a good idea to install a shift kit while I was at it, and from the sound of things, the Trans Go is the way to "go".
