Sudden valvetrain noise after oil change.
Last time I changed my oil/filter, I used the same oil I always have (pennzoil high mile. 10w-30), except I added a bottle of Lucas Oil Treatment to it. I didnt go over full, but ever since then I've had this noise that sounds like rockers(that is very audible from even a good distance away), and appears to be in the passenger side cylinder heads only. The thing I cant figure out is why. Did I break something loose when I put the new oil in? Is the Lucas additive too thick to allow proper lubrication? It said on the bottle that it can be used in engines much smaller than mine(3.1 V6), or is there something sub standard about the product, alot of people I know use it, and this is the first problem they've heard of. Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated.

id say drain it out and change the filter. try again w/o the lucas in there. my personal opinion on that stuff is that if there isnt a problem, dont use it. i really dont care for it, but lots of others do. id say change it first and see once what happens. how many miles do you have?

I have 104,284 miles on it now, so it was propbably 150 or miles ago that I changed it. Was thinkin about just changin the oil again, but wanst sure if the problem was already there and I just couldent tell till I put the thicker oil in there. (if that makes any sense)

alot of times additives like that will break loose a small clog (or many small clogs) and they will mass into one big one.
This may have been what happened to you.
I would...
1. wait untill the oil is cold, and do your best to only drain approx 1/2-3/4 of a Qt. replace that with oil detergent, IE motor flush. Now be warned, this can cause more harm then good.
So it COULD fix you one clog, but break free clumps of oil that have been preventing outside leaks.
Either way, run that untill the next oil change, and it should make an immediate difference. For safety, also replace about 1/2 Qt in your next oil change with detergent as well. After that, the engine (if you were to take it apart) would be pretty damn clean. so you can go back to straight oil.

personally, i believe that whatever kind of oil the manufacturer recommends should be run in the engine, but lots of others have different opinions. yours should take 5w30, unless modifications have been made that would require a thicker oil.
try changing it out and see once what you find after that.

Yea...I'll be changing it very soon. Decided that would be the best plan, but it was mentioned above that a detergent oil/motor flush should also be used. I've heard mixed things about using said products, such as the possibiliity of further increasing the problem, causing oil leaks, possible oil consumption....but, if I were to go that rout, I've heard from many people that sea foam* brand is of good quality, but what others. Thanx for the help guys.
thanks again,

Seafoam is good, about the best really. Otherwise the oil flush ones are good just before the change, like add a day or so early. I use the one in the big (Qrt) grey bottle personally and have had good results with it.
I would say, hold off on the oil change. Add a small bottle of seafoam and see what happens. I bet it will get better.

Do you have an oil pressure gauge, or just an idiot light? If gauge, is it reading about 40 at idle?
It sound to me like just a fluke or coencidence. You may have broken a lifter or rocker. The additive you used should not cause any problem, thicker oil is good as long as you have proper pressure.

I have the stock oil pressure gage, it shows the proper ammount of pressure, but I dont really trust the factory unit for accuracy. As for broken parts, lets hope not. The noise hasnt gotton any worse, or any better for that matter, but if something was broken, I would think it would get worse as time went by. Thank's for all the help guys.
