How many of you have replaced your motor?
My buddies v6 ran 2.5qts low and is having bearing troubles and a collapsed lifter. Im gonna have to replace it soon. Im lookin around for a low mile 2.8 to drop in it. How much did you guys pay for the motors or swap? This is a daily driver so were gonna have to do it quick, how long did the swap take for you guys.

Swap takes about 2 days if you have to buy parts, a few hours if it's ready and waiting to be droped in. Tell him to find a low mileage 3.4L longblock, he isn't going to find a decent 2.8L motor.

My 83 I paid nothing for the motor. My uncle had it out of his S-10 (he put a 305 in it). It took me far too long to do the swap. But I wasn't working on it consistently and ended up rebuilding the motor before putting it in.
I paid $75 for the 86's replacement. That swap took about a weekend.

I have replaced mine. Close to 200k on it. Piston holes were egg shapped and was starting to wiggle the piston around in it.
I spent almost 2 months doing little piddly things to the motor, just short of a rebuild. Heads, rockers, timing chain, oil pan, polished inside the intake, etc.
The actual SWAP, took a long weekend for me.
Started friday night dx'ing wires, hoses, getting hoist.
Sat, dx'd trans, motor mounts, pulled distrib, then motor. Dropped new back in, trans bolted back up.
Sun, put the top of the motor back together (3times, ), reconnect wires, etc etc. could have set timing, but decided to wait.
Monday night I set timing and drove it around.

I replaced mine for the same reason as your friend. Stupid me, I thought, well it would just be easier to put in another 2.8, I ended up ripping the whole top off of it anyway, so I should have just bought a 3.4. The replacement motor cost me like 50 or so I think. A local shop quoted me at 2500 for the whole thing (about 3 times what I paid for the car). I swapped it with my cousin, our first time ever, in about 3 days.

I wouldn't rush if you haven't done it before. take your time and label everything with tape n a good marker. Even the obvious stuff. Makes it easier in the long run. But if you had parasitic, its only a few hr swap. But thats not till after you did it 50 times.
took a tranny in and out of a dodge once so many time I had it down to about 20 mins, did it alone and just sat it on my chest.
stupid thing had a drain plug / flex plate bolt for the TC.
And getting it to seal was a pita.

Alright managed to replace the lifters adjust rockers and regasket the fuel rail. Dropped some maxlife oil in there and shes purring like a kitten. She has 40psi oil press at idle and 60 psi at wot Before it used to have 0psi at idle and 10psi at wot. Found a 3.4L out of a 94 firebird that was rearended for 150 however. Gonna build that for him.
As for engine swaps .. ive done em. I was just gettin an est. time for the v6 swap boogie.
Hes also lookin very seriously into dowards turbo kit.

Replaced my old 2.8 (turned out to be a 3.1 crank, odd) with a 3.4L. I got the 3.4L for free from a friend... dunno the total cost, decent amount of new parts and some machining and I didn't keep track... so it's hard to say.
But there is absolutely no way I would buy another 2.8 if I had access to a 3.4L. My opinion is skewed though, considering my old 2.8 put down 77rwhp... in 3rd gear because it couldn't pull 4th gear... lol.
Take pictures of where things are/go. It helps a lot.
Replaced the lifters, but not the cam? ... eh.

You need to swap parts. You pretty much just take the top half of your 2.8 and put it on the bottom half of the 3.4. Not really that much work.
As you read in other posts, this has been covered in some detail.
