Dynomax cat-back almost in

Well, I finally got a chance to do some work on my car. I installed my Hurst short-throw shifter, but I haven't had a chance to take it for a spin yet.

I'm still in the process of installing the exhaust because I am missing the new mounting bracket for the I-pipe. I had a heck of a time finding the cat-back system up here in Vancouver for a decent price and ended up having to buy all the parts separately because no one could get the kit for me. Hence, why I am missing the new bracket (until tomorrow).

So I was just doing some quick calculations based on the fact that my old exhaust was not a 2.5 inch exhaust, it was 2.25 or something and had crimp-bends. So considering the larger size of the pipes and the fact that it has mandrel-bends, I estimate about a 50% increase in cross-sectional area assuming 80% of the original flow area at the crimp-bends.

Not to hijack this thread, but I have the 91 Firebird 3.1L V6. I've come to the conclusion, through this board and others, that Dynomax will be my best bet for sound/performance.

1) Is this what I should buy? http://store.summitracing.com/partde...1&autoview=sku

2) Will it pretty much bolt on to my cat, or is my cat not 2 1/2? If it's not direct bolt on, what will I need to change?

3) And lastly, will it really make my car sound better? It's not a power monster to begin with so as far as HP increase, I'm not racing anyway. I just want it to sound nice. Is Dynomax the best for this?

I have the dynomax kit from summit. It was cheapest place at the time I got it.

Other then the fact that they slid my cat-bolt flange on backwards, it was a direct bolt in for me.

Sound at idle is almost a 305 sound. Now once your on it, you can tell its a v6.

So at idle it sounds like a 305, but running it just sounds like a 6 again? Did you notice any power increase at all? I assume you have/had the same engine as mine. Any other suggestions for a better sounding system?

yes, at idle is sounds like a 305, and up to say 1700-2000'ish rpms. Above that it sounds like a v6 with exhaust again.

I never drove the car with stock system. I bought the car with bad breaks, trans, exhaust. Exhaust was installed before tranny was fixed. So I can give no honest comparison.

Yes, I had a 3.1 in mine tell exactly a year ago this month (I think?). but still, it sounded no different with the 3.4 installed.

:edit:. somewhere on here is a crappy recording of my car with 3.4, no cat, headers, and dynomax catback.

I could possibly make another recording with the mic further back to get better sound quality.

So is it even worth it? Or might you be able to recommend a better sounding setup within the same price range? (The Dynomax catback dual exhaust is $190 shipped from summit)

Also, I find that when I'm cruising I'm usually around 1700 RPMs anyway.

And yeah, if someone wants to link me to a recording of a 3.1 with a Dynomax Dual Cat Back (or other performance brand) that'd be great.

It's actually been more than a yr. I went down to Keesler in Feb 9IIRC), because I was in Tyndall in March for Silver Flag.

Here's a really crappy recording of Dales 3.4 (when it was mine) of opne manifolds & an ear bud as a mic:

I recall the great fire, but I'm still not sure what you mean by "t-pipe hasn't been touched/put on kinked".

Anyways, I picked up the hanger for the intermediate pipe today and got the car all back together. I noticed in the Helms/shop manual they show the same hanger that I had to buy. The one that was on my car was different. The exhaust sounds awesome and the shifter is great. The shifter is actually quite stiff (you can take the springs out to make it softer) but I really do like it. There is a bit of a difference in power versus my old exhaust which actually turned out to be quite restrictive.

And on that second link Dale just posted, you can find the link to my sound recordings.

Yes, WLK-17493 is the system for our cars.

Camaro_junkie, where did you buy the hanger from? Do you mean the hanger that was welded to the I-pipe, or do you mean the factory V8-style hanger that was bolted to the rear subframe?

I mean the hanger that bolts to the underbody. I bought it from a chain called Auto Parts Plus that carries Dynomax products.
