Those with an auto 3.1

Is it normal for the tach to get messed up to where it doesn't show the right RPMs? Reaon I'm asking is because I test drove this '91 RS auto and when I got on the gas the RPMs went way up into the red, but the engine wasn't nearing revving that high. Even with normal driving it was near or in the yellow.

Re: Those with an auto 3.1

Yeah. When the tach goes bad it will start reading high. No way to fix it, have to swap out the tach.

So I guess it isn't much of a problem then? But if I wanted to fix it should I replace the one in the dash or go with an aftermarket one?

mine went and i replaced it with an aftermarket tach. left the old one in because i'm too lazy to take it out. got a nice small tach to mount right below the middle a.c vents. looks good. easy install too.

holy hell, WOT from N to P, I'd be more worried about the engine switching from D to R than to park. Does it still shift ok? Get that sticking throttle checked asap, thats pretty dangerous.

it shifts fine, like brand new. The engine is fine to i just got done putting some new plugs in it that i had ordered last week. Maybe it has something to do with me flooring it at a dead stop? Did a hell of a burn out pulled up smoke in the rain. Then i turned back into work to see what my friends thought and they were like do it again, do it again. So i did it again, another nice *** burnout but then it stayed in wot so it scarred the **** outta me.

I can't even drive in the rain anymore, and I have brand ne BF Goodrichs on the back. Everytime I push the pedal in further than a 1/4 i'm spinning all over the place. Don't even ask about goin around corners, its like stunt driving.

Must take off in 2nd. And thats still with to high of rear gear.

Doesnt sound right for the tach to peg at 40mph. Replacing the cluster is quite easy. Will need some really small metric sockets and some patience.

Yea my throttle stuck a couple times when I drove down to visit an old friend. It was right after I got the car fixed and only happened twice, only at partially open throttle. Maybe it was from the car sitting too long?

Never happened after that.

Patience, you go listen to an old GNR song first

As for spinning in the rain. It sounds like it was majorly out of tune. I had an auto before the 5sp and in the rain it would still spin easy, but not as easy as in the manual. Remeber in the s10 that you have NO weight over the tires. And trust me, I have owned or driven an s10 with every engine they were issued. Then 1 with an engine that was NOT issued in it

3rd gear would have nothing to do with it spinning in rain, but would on the tach. But at 40mph it would just be thinking about 4th, not in it yet.

If your looking to buy the car, I may suggest passing. Sounds majorly out of tune, possible tranny slipping, un-known gauges, and shifter selector not working.

your car is severely out of tune if you're not able to spin even a little in the rain. Although this car lacks in the horse power department, it does make a decent amount of torque. Although not nearly enough for the size of the car. But goin around corners is completely out of the question at anything more than a putter, otherwise, i'm fishtailing all over the damn place. sometimes, its fun other times, like when on coming traffic is headed your way, it isn't so great anymore.

3 or 4 sizes to wide. Um, 65.. That would make it bigger diameter as well correct?

My car will still spin 245/50/16's, and sticky compound as well.

When you say you can spin the tires, does that mean with the brake or just flooring it from a stop? Only time I can spin the tires without braking and just flooring it, is when I take a sharp turn at slow speeds, like a u-turn.

wider tires will spin easier in the rain. its the little narrow tires that still get traction on wet roads. and, you should be able to spin them (or it) just punching the throttle from a dead stop...without hitting the brakes. also, if your throttle sticks, DO NOT shift into neutral! simply shut the ignition off! you will over-rev the engine easily if you shift into neutral in this circumstance.

Its been two days and my tranny is shifting perfect, no apparent problems. As for the throttle sticky someone earlier said it could be from sitting along time. That is probaly why, caz i just got my tags on it september 14th, and before that it has been sitting in my yard for almost two years.

All that grinding was was your parking pawl getting the crap grinded outta it. THere is a lever that meshes with a gear on the input shaft, when you put the car in park. That's all it is. If you damage it enough though, you do risk the car "slipping" out of park and maybe rolling down the hill into an intersection where it can be demolished by a semi truck.

on my freshly-rebuilt 3.1, I STILL COULDN'T BURN OUT

I could chirp the tires on the right pavement, and I could do it on turns...

actually I couldn't even powerbrake and spin the tires... not after I bought good tires...

I think it's because I have 3.23s or something...

I was at roughly 2,000RPM at 85-90mph.. if that calculates out to anything.

getting a v8 is going to kill my friggin gas mileage... unless I get one with 2.73 gears.
