How's this for a mystery problem

I keep feeling a slight drop in power while driving. Seems like it's always when just cruising in any gear or rpm range. Just the ever so slight feeling that something keeps grabbing and slowing me down for a second, and then releasing.

It's barely noticable, but it looks like my fuel is dropping faster than normal too.

I was running 76 the last 3 tanks, and switched to texaco to give that a try. About 130 miles after switching is when I suddenly noticed this new problem. The gas gauge was dropping normally up to this point.

The u-joints all feel fine (even though it's time to replace them), and the rear axle doesn't seem to have any problems.

I'll probably get the alignment checked soon. The struts and shocks are shot, but I don't think it's my current problem.

Front wheel bearings are good.

Haven't checked for codes yet, but haven't had the SES come on either.

Base timing is at 10, but I need to go back and check something on the timing vs rpm advancement.

When I get this tank down low, I'm refilling with 76 again just in case, but I know it's not going to be that easy.

No exhaust leaks.

I'm also going to pull the belt and see if any pulleys are seizing up.

going to pull the dist cap and have a look at that stuff too.

Need to double check vaccum lines too.

Other than that, I'm not sure what else to ckeck at the moment.

Just started hearing a rpm related clicking/rattle that seem to be coming from in the dash behind the instruments down low somewhere. I'll work on finding that too.

Now I'm not the smartest or the most tech person but from what I've been told is it you run your car on lets say on 93 and then you switch to 89 the car won't run right?

Maybe thats whats happening? idk just throwin that out there

Nope. Just 87octane all around.

I'll drive it tomorrow and try the open/closed loop test too. I didn't think about it before.

Tough problem to locate...

Since you say it only happens when crusing.... I would disconnect the cruise control and see if that does anything.. and maybe check out the distributor since it advances at cruise...
