My V6 2.8 Camaro

I just got my 86' camaro on saturday and when i was test driving it it felt really slow. It wouldn't pick up to speed as fast as i thought it should be. Specially in red lights everyone would go right by.

I changed the tranny fluid. added a lucas octane booster, and stp engine fuel system cleaner.

its running alot better and all that was under $40 bucks.

but what are some quick things i can pick up at any local autozone that will give me more hp/accelaration?

thanx

Re: My V6 2.8 Camaro

The first thing you want to do is never assume that the person(s) who owned the car before you took care of it the right way. I also just picked up an '86 Camaro w/2.8 (see my turbo thread here in the V6 section), and after pulling the spark plugs, I not only noticed a couple of the wires arcing because of a few slits in them, but two of them were actually missing the terminals (under the boot) that clip onto the spark plug themselves. I replaced all those, then checked the timing (which was at 0 degrees BTDC), so I advanced it back to the stock 10 degrees BTDC. The TPS also seemed faulty, as RPM progression wasn't too linear, so I replaced that sensor with one that I already had, corrected a few vacuum leaks that I also discovered, and now the engine runs like she's brand new again....

Re: My V6 2.8 Camaro

lol, STP fuel cleaner. buy some seafoam if you really wanna clean that engine out. Best and most versitle engine cleaner on the market in my opinion.

Definitley +1 for tom P.'s major tune up. Get good wires, plugs, rotor, cap, etc.

If you've got the knowlwge and money for a turbo you will see major preformance gains. If you're really loaded you could pay someone else to put one on and fab any tubing you'd need.

Re: My V6 2.8 Camaro

Have your catalytic converter checked out. When I bought mine I needed to replace it because the cat was shot and it was robbing all my power. Any nasty rattling coming from the exhaust? Also check out your plugs and wires and vacuum lines. Tom P's tuneup is the best thing to start with for sure. Good luck and welcome to the joys of owning a 3rd gen

You won't find any kits for the 2.8... I've looked. You'll want to piece one together either from a kit, assorted parts store off-the-shelf parts, or pipe from your local hardware store. Problem is the MAF sensor on these older models... Later cars don't have to deal with it, and the people that make the kits don't make the right size tubing to match the MAF, so you end up using reducing sleeves.
