Then the usual things to start with are intake and exhaust, e.g. cold air intake, throttle body coolant bypass, performance exhaust system, but there's lots more you can do check out this link
Don't do the TB coolant bypass, you will get NO gains and it just ends up being a pain in the a##.
+1 on the major tune up. Get a good exhaust and make a CAI out of PVC pipe and a K&N filter. My UDP has made a big difference, replace your most likley clogged cat (it never flowed well to begin with), throw a cam in there with some 1.6 (I believe) Rockers, score some ford fuel injectors off an old 2.9L, replace your timing chain, re-gear the diff........ and so on.

10-4 mine just started leaking. Poor workmanship lol.
I'm thinking about a high flow cat too, could you tell me what the symptoms of a plugged cat are? I have to give my 3.1 major throttle to get up any sort of hill (or is that just the lack of a V8?) it's pretty embarrasing.
Failing that I might replace the cat with some straight pipe, I notice the sensor is pre-cat so that should be OK anyway right?
I dunno about symptoms of a plugged cat other than lack of power. I got rid of mine bacause the innerds were breaking appart and rattling. I put a Cherrybomb glasspack in place of my cat, flows almost as good as a straightpipe and adds some tone to the exhaust. There's only 1 O2 sensor so you should be fine.
doesnt matter the budget..i just want a street car with a fast V6..nothing crazy drag set up or anyhting..but just a car the will keep up the the small block V8s
If you want to keep up with small block v8's your going to need full bolt ons, a good tune and some power adder. Either Nitrous(cheaper) or turbo. Either way its gonna be hard to keep up with a decently built small block.
If your talking about the poorly maintained 305 a buddy has then dont worry about it. Throw some 3.73 gears in and smoke him from light to light everyday anyday.
Personally ive been messing with my lil v6 for a while and I love the car. It still is decently fast and sounds great. I just want alot faster. So im saving up and im going to do the LS1 swap. If you want to do the v6 and keep it then do whats been mentioned above. Dont forget suspension tho. Doesnt matter if you somehow make that lil v6 put out 300hp(which we all know is a very long strech) if you dont have the suspension and tires to hook it up to the ground all your doing is wasting time. Ive seen built 350s get smoked by bolt on hondas cause the guy with the 350 has way to much hp and tq for the set up he had it in. All it did was spin for the first 60feet.
