best mini starter?
well i put my engine in tonight, finally, and the driver side header fit great, but the passenger side, #8 is stuck between the starter and frame, i could try and beat the header, but for one, i dont want to do that, and also thats the tube with the slip fit pipe, so thats a pretty bad idea IMO, i decided to just break down and buy a mine starter and not have to worry about it anymore, but was wanting to know the best one for the price. TCI has one thats about 160 or so, thats not to bad, and i saw a few others in jegs, just wanted some opinons. thanks.
I am using the TCI starter that you mentioned. Great quality and it has plenty of room between my SLP 1 3/4" header collectors. The one thing I did not like about the starter is that one of the terminals on the solenoid uses a spade type push on connector. It was a simple fix, though.
Anyways, I like it and it has no problems cranking my 10:1 383ci. Here in Texas it also gets really hot and it has had no heat soak problem either.
The starter comes with shims and starter bolts.

I've had good luck with the Summit Mini-Starters.
They can be rotated to eight different positions and I've had no
header/ heat-soak problems.
Part# SUM-G1660, $157.95

thanks for all the replys. i think i might have gotten lucky. i was at work today talking to my boss about the starter, he walked over to the wall were we keep the starters and pulled out a mini starter and gave it to me, he said its brand new. i was like man, we stock everything
. it is a mini starter, his brother bought it for a boat with a chevy 350 in it, but was unable to use it because come to find out, a marine starter has 12 teeth and a automotive starter has 11 teeth. he said it was only turned over a few times, he said it was binding up and then they took it off. I am going to try and put it on tonight, check the clearances and stuff and see if is going to work, hopefully it will. if so, i can get it for 50 bucks. anyone see why this might now work?

Powermaster #9500 is a killer starter it's got the solonoid on the bottom off the starter away from heat, it can turn up to an 18:1 compression motor, and it has 200 ft/lbs of torque....It's a little more pricey, around $180-$200 but it's well worth the moeny

If you want the same starter as the others but at a much-cheaper price, go here:
http://www.tommyjohnsonjr.com/bs/
I and several third-gen friends have bought and installed the regular $120 starter on our engines with no troubles. It won't have a fancy sticker on it, but it's the same exact model as the TCI and others. Weighs 10 lbs. less than a stock starter too.

if ya want to save yourself a few bucks and have a large diameter flywheel and a block that accepts staggared bolt pattern starters use and S-10 4.3L starter. i tried a CRV and CSI mini starter on my car and neither would clear my hooker long tube headers in any of the adjustable possitions. one of the guys that works at the local NAPA turned me on to the S-10 starter. he used to run them on his dirt track cars and they were turning over 11:1 motors just fine. only on the hottest days when i been running my car hard does it have a hot start problem but i only have to bump the key twice to get it to kick over. i paid around $120 for the starter with a lifetime warranty.

the starter worked out just fine, no clearance problems at all, its amazing how much smaller it is, hence the mini starter. The car isnt running yet, I am waiting on the converter it should be here next week I hope. Fast3rd, funny you should mention that, I was putting a rear main seal in a 92 S10 4x4(I do NOT ever want to do that job again)and I was putting the rear seal in, and I looked at the starter and thought, huh..that kinda looks like my mini starter.
