i am going to get a CD player for my camaro, but i have no idea which kind to get, i want to make sure i get my money's worth, without going all out in price.... n e suggestions?

I like Sony's lineup of decks. The best for your money is the CDX-4000, it's powerful and it sounds excellent for you money. I've been through a lot of decks and I've found Sony to perform the best.

Sony is my most prefered in all electronics,but I also like Pioneer and I got a Pioneer 180 watt(4x45) with Mosfet ,whatever the hell that is?,CD player for my 90 GTA for $250 at Best Buy.I have also seen the same unit at Wal-Mart for about the same price and if you are short on cash Wal-Mart has layaway.What I like about it is that it fills that whole giant hole not like a regular size unit that you have to use that black plastic spacer around it.

 

I have not had good experience with Sony products. Two years ago I paid $200 for a Sony Xplod cd player at Best Buy. I also got the $40 4 year replacement plan. About one week after I installed it I got an error message when trying to play cd's. I took it back and they gave me another one. That one lasted several months then it did the same thing again. I took it back and they offered to install another one for free cause they claimed I was installing them wrong. The guy checked my installation and said he couldn't have done it better so that wasn't the problem.
Well, about two weeks ago it did the same thing again. I took it back and told them I didn't want another Sony. They let me pick whatever I wnated for the original purchase price of $200. I chose a Kenwood KDC-419 and I like it much better. It has a lot of neat options and the tuner pulls in more stations. Plus I can get Sirius satellite radio if I want.
Let's see, 3 Sony's equals $600, plus a Kenwood equals $800. The moral of the stroy is buy a cd player from Best Buy and get the replacement plan. It saved me $600.

 

Mosfet is a filter used through the amp that lets the sound outputs be heard clearer.

The head units that fill the entire hole are considered "double din". They don't require a plastic spacer.


As for the Sony not reading, were you trying to play a CD-R? Like I've said before, I've used many different decks before and Sony has so far been the best. I guess there's always a few lemons.

 

Actually a friend of mine had an Xplode deck and it died on him a month after he got it... I think that whole line is bogus myself. Sony usually makes good stuff but they dropped the ball on this one...

 

Pioneer or alpine is the only thing you will find in any of my cars.

 

In response to iroc22, not a flame just a correction. MOSFET is not a filter, it is a type of transistor. The amp IC is made up of a lot of transistors (MOSFETs, the T stands for transistor) integrated in one package. Most of the amp ICs used today are MOSFET amp ICs. Pioneer just uses it as a marketing thing. It dose produce a cleaner signal, because of a higher signal to noise ratio. Head units that fill the entire hole in our cars are a “DIN and a half”. Some of the imports are a “double DIN". Now, as someone that has worked on car radios for a little over 5 years I can tell you without a doubt that SONY is the LOWEST quality you can get for the price. There optical pickups are the weakest on the market, this is why almost all of the no name manufactures use Sony pickups. IROCZ88, I’m shore that the problems with your Sonys where the optical pickups. Sony also has the weakest tuners on the market period. I see it all the time, the Sony someone put in their car gets fewer stations then their stock radio did. This is not a flame to the people with a Sony. But I see this ever day, someone gets a Sony because there friend has one, and they gets pissed at use for selling it to them. Their (Sony) camcorders are probably the best on the market at that price range, But thier car stereos and junk.

Dollar for dollar you can’t beat a Pioneer. That is to say a good middle of the road Pioneer. Their cheep $hit is cheep $hit. Their Top dollar $hit is Top dollar $hit. Their middle of road units are some of the best on the market in their price range. Good sound quality, great build quality, good design, just a good unit in general.

All I know is that I have used several brands before; Rockford, Pioneer (Premier Series), Kenwood, Alpine and Sony. I was so pleased with the CDX-4000 Sony, I bought a CDX-750 Sony with no problems so far.

 

I have great luck in the past with Pioneer, JVC and Sony (not for car audio mind you). Alpine is a great name but usually pretty expensive.

 

I haven't had any trouble out of my Clarion and it's 3 years old, been in 4 different vehicles. I just wish I never put it on my credit card

 

If you don't mind spending a little extra money, I would go with the Alpine, I have a CDA-7873 in my car and am really impressed with it, it has all kind of features such as angle face, 60wx4, XM radio, and front, rear, and sub outputs.

 

I seem to like the flush fit of my alpine CDA-d855. It is made for the 1.5 DIN GM and chrysler cars. It has two pre-outs and can be gotten at tweeter audio for about 299.99 if they still have them.

Alpine CDA-7897. Seems to have everything, including the stealth oversize fantom face. A bit pricey, but I love mine.

I picked up a JVC KDSX980 a few weeks ago and I love it. Plays CD-R, CD-RW, MP3 CD's, 200W (4x50w). And it has a aux input if you really need it. Dual pre-outs too. Got a lot of features you use and not too much fluff you don't Best of all, it's only $300 CDN (Circuit City has it for ~$230 US)

Worth a look

 

I bought this pioneer unit a year ago I liked it so much I bought anoither one for my wifes car they are great.

I always by jvc head units. I think there the best out there. I have one from 94' and it works better than a brand new pioneer.
