They're a good head for your money. They don't put out ground pounding flow numbers, but they have excellent quality and can perform.
Are you set on aluminum heads? If not, Vortec heads are really cheap and will make tons of power.....

the stock vortec cast head (the newer design with 30* exhaust back cut) out flows the edelbrock performer head. they are pitiful heads and are not worth the money. if it were me for that price range, i would be looking at AFR heads. they make great low end power and have a setup that you are looking for.

If i dont build my 400 in the near future, i will be getting a set of these heads. also, look at comp cams web page, they have a dyno page now with their cams, look at how much power they arent getting out of their engines cause of SH#$## heads.

just make sure you know how much machine work you are getting into giving these heads a big lift cam. there is an article in a recent CHP, so beware that the stock springs take .45 lift i believe tops. also, 10:1 on cast iron heads is in danger of detonation so beware of that also. i have tinkered with the idea of leaving my vortec heads on my 350HO and seeing what kinda horsepower i can crank out of it...

To run the XE274 cam you dont' need any machining for valvesprings, just the right ones, and they are less than 50 bucks.
I know the springs that go along with the XR270hr camshaft(the double ones) fit in without machining as well. Beings that there's no reason to put 1.6's on there, ther's no reason for machinework to make them fit.
The stock springs on the vortec heads are garbage, they dont even have a dampner on it. pull em off and throw em out.
In my Opinion they are the way to go. i've seen more vortec headed 12 sec rides at my local track than AFR headed ones

for the amount of power you guys want to make the vortecs would be the sensible choice. they make good power for a minimun investment. if you want 'exotic' heads so you can impress your friends with receipts instead of your subpar timeslips then go for the AFR 190's(throw on the 1.6 roller rockers while you're at it. it appears to be a trend)
if you guys need $1,200 heads to make 400 horsepower you either have money to burn or are just totally clueless.
