water pump

I have about $3500 invested into my engine and i am still using a stock water pump(what can i say im dead broke right now). I want to get an aluinum water pump that will circulate the coolant better than my stock pump. But i dont have alot of money to spend. Any suggestions on a good bang for the buck pwater pump? thanks alot

hey man I hear you about being broke. I used the stock pump on my 383 when I put it in. Anyways right now I have the Edelbrock Victor Series Water Pump. I got it from Jegs for abou $150. Seems to be pretty good. There is a rebuild kit for $60.

Stewart waterpumps. I'm gonna leave it at that. Either you get the best or you pay in the long run. They have STAGES so you don't need to get the top of the line. I went with a stage 2 unit and it cost me $160, $10 more than edelbrocks but from what I've been told, it's the best $10 difference. These guys do nothing but cooling and they're used in NASCAR more than edelbrock, maybe for a reason! Edelbrock is good, don't get me wrong, but Stewarts takes the cake. Look at the units, if you really don't have a lot of money then get the stage 1, it'll work GREAT and has all new parts.

I second the Stewart pump. I got a stage 1 and it flows like mad.

Meziere electric water pump. Flows 35 gpm constantly. No belt driven pump can come close to that.

I agree that the meziere pump flows great(35gmp) at any speed but it only beats the belt driven pumps at idle. At normal crusing speeds the Stewart stage 1 pump flows DOUBLE that number. Where does the engine speen most of its time? Crusing not idling.
Here's a comparasion between edlebrock and stewart with flow rates.

John,

Those are pretty impressive numbers. I live in a highly populated area, so it isn't uncommon to spend just as much time idling in traffic as I do cruising. I also like the fact that I can cool down the engine by running the pump with the engine off. And I wanted to eliminate belt driven accessories. For those reasons the meziere unit meets my needs.

I didn't think a belt driven pump could flow that much. I wonder how much flow is really needed - I drive my car daily and don't have any overheating issues.

Thanks for the info,

I couldn't find one on their website, just stage 1 and 2 are available for 87 and later. You might call them for a special request.

Do you mean reverse flow, or reverse drive? The only engines that require reverse flow are LT1s and LT4s. If you have a serpentine belt, then you need a pump with reverse drive, right?

Maybe this will help. Only LT1s and LT4s are reverse flow engines as was previously mentioned. Ours are reverse rotation water pumps, they flow the same direction as a standard or normal sb chevy they just turn backwards. It has a differant impeller made just opposite of a normal rotating pump. Hope this cleared it up for everyone.

ok that makes sense sorry I guess I was using the wrong term. I guess I meant reverse drive. I learn something new every day.
